Department Summary
The Division of Undergraduate Education and Student Success (UESS) promotes academic excellence, universal access, engagement and achievement for the student scholar.

UESS programs focus on the educational trajectory of the student by providing opportunities and services essential for progress toward scholastic objectives and intellectual development.

UESS departments and programs serve the entire population of UO undergraduate students and partner closely with other campus units to support student success and engagement.

Focused on ensuring student success, retention and completion, the Office of Academic Advising (OAA) serves as the central campus academic advising resource.

OAA is comprised of professional advisors that provide coordinated coaching and support that is student-centered, caring, holistic, inclusive, and culturally aware.

Advisors collaborate with students to help them achieve their academic potential, participate in relevant learning and research opportunities, and reach their professional goals.

OAA assists students in making a smooth transition to the university and provides wrap around advising services to undergraduate students in a variety of scenarios (exploring, transfer, students in distress, academic/financial concerns, and first-year).

The OAA team works in a fast-paced, drop-in and appointment-based office setting.

Each year, OAA sees students, representing diverse academic interests, abilities, and cultural, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds.

OAA also offers outreach and training to faculty and department advisors, coordinates advising at all orientation events, and supports implementation of advising policy across campus.


Position Summary
Academic advisors help students make a smooth transition into the university, understand general education curriculum in light of an increasingly global environment, set academic goals, and address academic concerns.

Advisors work with undecided students exploring majors and students in academic distress.

Outreach activities include advising presentations and programming in the residence halls, across campus, and Oregon community colleges.

Advisors in Academic Advising work with departmental partners across campus to promote the mission of the University of Oregon, foster academic achievement, and provide guidance and support as students make thoughtful educational choices.

Advisors must be culturally competent and able to work with first generation, low income, underrepresented, international, transfers, re-entry, and students in crisis or scholastic difficulty.

Advisors demonstrate respect for all individuals and welcome diversity among students and colleagues.

Advisors work in a fast-paced, drop-in and appointment-based office setting delivering advising services on a year-round basis in small and large settings.

Advisors report to the Associate Director of OAA.

Advisors must exhibit professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, and the ability to create a welcoming and professional atmosphere in the office.

This person must exhibit cultural humility and agility, with the ability and commitment to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.


Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Two years’ experience providing advising or counseling in education, counseling, social work/behavioral support, or college/university environment.


Professional Competencies
• A broad working knowledge of student development principles.
• Demonstrated understanding of issues facing diverse groups (e.g. low-socioeconomic, first generation, underrepresented students of color, non-traditional, and under-prepared individuals).
• Effective communication skills.
• Ability to set operational goals from strategic plans.
• High-level organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced, detail oriented and time sensitive environment.
• Diligently attends to details and pursues quality in accomplishing tasks.
• Recognizes situations that warrant initiative and moves forward without hesitation; resolving issues, problems, or situations.
• Ability to anticipate next steps and execute independently.
• Proficiency with MS Office Suite (or similar).

Ability to produce professional correspondence, documents, data reports, and presentations.
• Ability to work collegially and collaboratively with diverse internal and external constituencies.
• Knowledge of university policies and procedures.


Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in social work, counseling, marriage and family therapy, student services/student affairs, higher education leadership or related area.
• Three years’ experience providing advising or counseling in education or college/university environment.
• Knowledge of University and/or community resources to assist individuals in meeting mental/physical health, financial, academic, and other basic needs.
