The ASL Interpreter/Deaf HOH Access Coordinator provides critical interpreting services, facilitates communication access, and enhances the overall inclusion of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (HOH) individuals within the university community.

This role also supports a caseload of students with disabilities who do not identify as Deaf/HOH but require accommodation for academic success.

Serves as Campus Security Authority (CSA).

Work hours: Mon-Fri; 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM or as work requirements indicate; In-office position located in Stephenville, Texas and may require work beyond normal business hours and some weekends.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Interpreting Services:

  • Provides ASL-English interpretation for Deaf/HOH students in classrooms, labs, and university-sponsored events.

  • Interprets for meetings, advising sessions, extracurricular activities, and other campus functions as needed.

  • Adapts interpreting style and register to match the needs of students, faculty, and staff.

  • Service Coordination:

  • Schedules and coordinate interpreting, CART (Communication Access Realtime Translation), and other accessibility services for Deaf/HOH students.

  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to ensure adequate communication access in classrooms and university programs.

  • Maintains qualifications as an ASL interpreter and manage service scheduling and logistics.

  • Classroom and Event Preparation:

  • Reviews class materials, syllabi, and lecture content in advance to ensure accurate interpretation.

  • Works with instructors to understand course-specific terminology and concepts.

  • Coordinates with event organizers to ensure appropriate access accommodations are in place.

  • Student Support and Advocacy:

  • Serves as a resource for Deaf/HOH students, providing guidance on communication, access and self-advocacy.

  • Addresses student concerns related to interpreting services and accessibility accommodations.

  • Educates faculty and staff on best practices for working with Deaf/HOH students.

  • Administrative and Compliance Duties:

  • Maintains accurate records of interpreting services provided and service requests.

  • Ensures compliance with ADA, Section , and university policies regarding accessibility services.

  • Assists in budget planning for interpreting and CART services as needed.

  • Professional Development:

  • Stays current with best practices in ASL interpretation and accessibility services in higher education.

  • Attends workshops, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.

  • Maintains appropriate certification(s) and uphold the professional code of conduct for interpreters.

  • Minimum Requirements:

    Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Three years of related experience.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:

  • American Sign Language (ASL) and English in a variety of registers and formats, including academic, technical, and colloquial usage.

  • ADA, Section , and other federal/state laws and guidelines related to disability accommodations and access services.

  • Skills in:

  • Simultaneous and consecutive ASL-English interpretation across a wide range of settings.

  • Effectively managing multiple priorities, including scheduling, coordination, and documentation.

  • Use of assistive technologies and interpreting service platforms.

  • Ability to:

  • Adapt communication styles to fit diverse audiences and individual needs.

  • Advocate for accessibility while maintaining professional boundaries.

  • Remain composed and accurate under pressure in dynamic or fast-paced environments.

  • Work independently and as part of a team to support institutional access goals.

  • Preferred Requirements:

    Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in American Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Education, Disability Services, Special Education, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Human Services, rehabilitation Counseling, or Education Administration

  • Six years of related experience.

  • RID Certification such as NIC (National Interpreter Certification), CI/CT (Certificate of Interpretation/Transliteration)

  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Post-secondary educational environments and the specific communication needs of Deaf/HOH students.

  • Interpreting ethics, cultural competencies, and confidentiality standards as outlined by RID and other professional organizations.

  • Interpersonal communication and collaboration with students, faculty, and administrators.

  • Compensation & Benefits

    Salary: Commensurate with experience

    Salary Range:

    The target base annual salary range is $47, to $61,.50 and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
