Adjunct Lecturer - Biological Sciences (College Now Program)
**FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT**
The College Now Program at Kingsborough Community College seeks Adjunct Lecturers to teach Biological Science courses in the College Now Program.
The successful candidates will teach BIO 18: The Biology of the Human Body, BIO 37: Human Genetics, BIO 39: Biology of Aging, BIO 61: Research Methods, BIO 70: The Science of Nutrition, SCI 1: Issues and Adventures in Science.
**BIO 18: The Biology of the Human Body (3 credits, 3 hour college level course open to junior and/or senior students)**
This course will offer a one-semester overview of anatomy and physiology of all organ systems of the human body.
The interrelationships between organ systems will be emphasized to provide a holistic view, practical applications to healthcare and reinforcement of health literacy skills.
Through lecture and discussion, the processes of the human body will be explored.
For each topic, interactive computerized lab experiences involving application of the process of scientific inquiry will be conducted.
In addition, current ethical issues in medicine and healthcare will be studied.
For non-science majors and those who plan to transfer to senior colleges within CUNY.
This class is in addition to the teacher's regular NYCPS work day.
**BIO 37 - Human Genetics** **(3 credits, 3 hour college level course open to junior and/or senior students)**
Introduces the principles of genetics with applications to human beings.
The different systems by which characteristics are inherited, representative human hereditary problems, roles of heredity and environment, a historical approach to genetics research, chromosomal disturbances and some diseases, modern components of genetics in relation to human fertilization, surrogacy and genetic engineering.
This class is in addition to the teacher's regular NYCPS work day.
**BIO 39: Biology of Aging (3 credits, 3 hour college level course open to junior and/or senior students)**
Biological aspects of the aging process, including definitions, characteristics and biological theories of aging, recent biological research, effects of disease and prescription drugs, determination of each student's aging profile, factors which modify the rate of the aging process including nutrition and exercise.
This class is in addition to the teacher's regular NYCPS work day.
**BIO 61: Research Methods ( 2 credit, 2 hour college level course open to junior and/or senior students)**
Introduction to the nature of scientific investigation and acquiring skills needed to develop a research problem.
Emphasis placed on reading primary sources of scientifc investigation and acquiring skills needed to develop a reserach problem.
Emphasis placed on reading primary sources of scientific literature, experiment design, data presentation and analysis, and preparation of a literature review.
This class is in addition to the teacher's regular NYCPS work day.
**BIO 70: The Science of Nutritiion** **(3 credits, 3 hour college level course open to junior and/or senior students)**
Increased food processing, chemical additions to food, and the great variety of available foods makes it important to understand the basic ideas of modern nutrition.
Such concepts as biochemical individuality as related to nutrition for optimum health are integrated with surveys of carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism.
Also studied are the role of vitamins and minerals in metabolic processes, food seledtion, special diets during illness, and safety of the food supply.
Students analyse their own diet.
This class is in addition to the teacher's regular NYCPS work day.
**SCI 1: Issues and Adventures in Science** **(3 credits, 3 hour college level course open to junior and/or senior students)**
The most recent and important discoveries in the biological and physical sciences are presented, observed, discussed, and experimented with, to acquaint students with the world around them.
Brain research, studies of aging, disease, fertility, immunity, and the origin of life are explored.
Studies emphasize relations to mankind's place in the universe, self-explorations and technological achievements.
This class is in addition to the teacher's regular NYCPS work day.
**_These positions are only available to NYCPS Teachers in College Now schools and is in addition to the teacher's regular work day._**
**QUALIFICATIONS**
**BIO 18: The Biology of the Human Body; BIO 37: Human Genetics; BIO 39: Biology of Aging; BIO 61: Research Methods; and SCI 1: Issues and Adventures in Science**
A graduate degree in the Biological Sciences.
A minimum of three years of teaching experience is preferred.
**_Additional requirement:_** A letter explaining why you think you can teach the course, indicating expertise in the content areas found in the course curriculum.
**BIO 70: The Science of Nutritrion**
A graduate degree in a life science or a related field.
A minimum of three years teaching experience is preferred.
**COMPENSATION**
$91.67 - $98.40.
Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
