Adjunct - Music Applied Instructor Pool

Job Summary

Southeastern University is seeking various applied music adjunct faculty to join our adjunct pool for their specific area of expertise.

Part-time faculty provide teaching and instruction to Southeastern University students and collaborate with other faculty to promote an engaging learning environment.

In addition to the teaching responsibility, part-time faculty serve as subject matter experts within their assigned discipline.

Essential Job Tasks:

  • Teach weekly applied lessons to students
  • Attend and evaluate student juries and recitals
  • Serves as course content expert to assist with curriculum maintenance and reviews individual courses for rigor and currency.
  • Resolves academic integrity concerns, grade inflation, and grade challenges in a timely manner.
  • Participates in faculty development opportunities and annual university mandatory trainings.
  • Other responsibilities and projects as assigned by the Academic Program Director, Chair and/or Dean.
  • May have the opportunity to serve as a Course Writer for an additional stipend, as determined by the Provost.
  • If assigned online courses:
    • Records and posts a welcome video and transcript.
    • Communicates with students to encourage engagement and course completion.
    • Conducts weekly outreach to students struggling in the course.
    • Participates in the classroom a minimum of four separate days during the week.
    • Responds to student email inquiries in a timely manner (48 hours) utilizing the university’s assigned email account.
    • Facilitates discussion boards.
    • Reviews student submissions and provides relevant, substantive, and value-added feedback in a timely manner through the MyFire Learning Management System.

      Feedback should explain point deduction/loss per the rubric.
    • Hosts a minimum of two live lectures throughout the course.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.

  • Total mastery of performance pedagogy in applied area(s)
  • English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Academic Processes - Knowledge of university guidelines, course descriptions, and academic terminology.
  • Clerical - Knowledge of office administrative procedures including word processing, managing files and records, typing, and other office procedures.
  • Computer - Knowledge of basic computer processes including word processing, web browsing, Google enterprise software (Google docs, Google sheets, etc.), and Microsoft Office including Basic Microsoft Excel.

Education and/or Experience

Adjunct Instructors Teaching Undergraduate and/or Certificate Courses must:

  • Possess a terminal degree or master's degree in music (or professional equivalent experience)
  • Possess experience teaching at the college/university level (preferred)

Equipment Required

Adjunct instructors are responsible for providing their own instrument (if applicable) and teaching materials, such as pedagogical books, repertoire, etc.

Adjunct instructors are required to provide their own equipment if teaching online.

This includes:

  • Computer, telephone, and a printer with a scanner that would meet the technical requirements for the university’s software and programs.
  • Secure and reliable internet access with sufficient speed/bandwidth to perform job responsibilities is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

All employees are responsible for maintaining an environment that is free from discrimination, intimidation, harassment, including sexual harassment.

  • This position is considered non-essential for the purposes of Emergency Response.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to sit, stand and operate a computer for extended periods of time.

Must be able to play and teach specified instrument(s) for extended period of time.

Schedule

Adjunct hours (part time) are specific to the courses assigned by semester.

Adjuncts are considered temporary, term-to-term employees with no guarantee of assigned work each semester.

TRAINING

All new hires and employees transferring into a new position will have a 90-day probationary period within which to learn the functions of the job and to be evaluated.

Following the probationary period, the employee can transition to regular status, have the probationary period extended in order to receive more training, or employment can be terminated.

Required compliance training is as follows:

In house training for MyFire and other internal systems

FERPA training may be required

SAFETY

  • SEU promotes a safe working environment.

SCREENING

All full-time and instructional positions at SEU are deemed security-sensitive and require background checks.

Employees required to drive their own personal vehicle, a rental car or an SEU vehicle in performance of their duties must pass an MVR records check and meet the requirements of the University’s insurance carrier in order to meet the requirements of the position.
