Position Description - Asbestos Worker


Business Group/Dept: Operations

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Supervisor

Date: February 13, 2024


Purpose of the Position

Safely and efficiently identify, remove, pack, transport, or dispose of hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead-based paint, waste oil, fuel, transmission fluid, radioactive materials, or contaminated soil.

Safely demolishes structures using hand tools or mechanical equipment as assigned.

Essential Position Responsibilities

  • Removes asbestos from ceilings, walls, beams, boilers, and other structures, following hazardous waste handling guidelines and following safe demolition techniques.

  • Assembles scaffolding and seals off work area, using plastic sheeting and duct tape.
  • Positions mobile decontamination unit or portable showers at entrance of work area.
  • Builds connecting walkway between mobile unit or portable showers and work area, using hand tools, lumber, nails, plastic sheeting, and duct tape.
  • Positions portable air evacuation and filtration system inside work area.
  • Sprays chemical solution over asbestos covered surfaces, using tank with attached hose and nozzle, to soften asbestos.
  • Cuts and scrapes asbestos from surfaces, using knife and scraper.
  • Shovels asbestos into plastic disposal bags and seals bags, using duct tape.
  • Cleans work area of loose asbestos, using vacuum, broom, and dustpan.
  • Places asbestos in disposal bags and seals bags, using duct tape.
  • Dismantles scaffolding and temporary walkway, using hand tools, and places plastic sheeting and disposal bags into transport bags.
  • Seals bags, using duct tape, and loads bags into truck or dumpster.
  • Follows directions of foremen, supervisors, and managers.

Physical activities: Must be on feet for up to 10 hours per day; must have unrestricted clearance to wear a respirator up to 10 hours a day with few breaks; regular standing, sitting, kneeling, twisting, bending; must be able to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 30 pounds regularly and over 50 pounds occasionally; must be able to work in extreme hot/cold, wet/dry environment; must be able to perform repetitive motions such as scraping, sanding, shoveling

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Half-face respirator; full-face respirator; steel toed footwear; hard hat; safety vest; protective eyewear; gloves; Tyvek suit

Travel: 25% to 100%

Licenses/Certifications Required: Asbestos Worker Initial Certification; Current Asbestos Worker Refresher; Current State Specific Asbestos Worker License; Current Valid Physician's Assessment; Current Respirator Fit Test

Preferred Education/Certifications: High School Diploma or GED; OSHA 10 or Higher

De manera segura hace demolición de estructuras usando herramientas de mano o equipo mecánico como le sea indicado.

Responsabilidades Esenciales de Puesto de Trabajo

  • Remueve asbestos de techos, paredes, vigas, calderas, y otras estructuras, siguiendo las guías del manejo de basura contaminada y siguiendo las técnicas para demolición de forma segura.

  • Ensambla andamios y prepara y sella el área de trabajo usando hojas de plástico y cinta adhesiva.
  • Posiciona unidades de descontaminación y regaderas portables en la entrada del área de trabajo.
  • Construye un pasillo que conecta entre la unidad móvil o regaderas al área de trabajo, utilizando herramientas de mano, madera, clavos, plástico y cinta adhesiva.
  • Posiciona evacuación de aire portables y sistema de filtración dentro del área de trabajo.
  • Rocia solución química sobre las superficies que contienen asbestos, usando tanques con manguera y rociador, para ablandar el asbestos.
  • Corta y raspa el asbestos de las superficies, usando navaja o raspador.
  • Apalea el asbestos dentro de bolsas desechables de plástico y sella las bolsa usando cinta adhesiva.
  • Limpia el área de trabajo del asbestos suelto, usando una aspiradora, escoba y recogedor.
  • Pone el asbestos en bolsas para desechar y sella la bolsa usando cinta adhesiva.
  • Desmantela los andamios y los pasillos temporales, utilizando herramientas de mano, y coloca plástico y las bolsas a desechar dentro de las bolsas de transporte.
  • Sella las bolsas, usando cinta adhesiva, y lleva las bolsas a una camioneta o un contenedor de basura especial.
  • Sigue las instrucciones del foreman, supervisor, y gerentes.

Actividades físicas: Debe estar de pie por hasta 10 horas al día; debe tener autorización sin restricciones para usar un respirador por hasta 10 horas al día con unos cuantos descansos; regularmente parado, sentado, de rodillas, doblándose, agachándose; debe ser capaz de empujar, jalar, levantar y cargar hasta 30 libras regularmente y más de 50 libras ocasionalmente; debe ser capaz de trabajar en climas extremos como calor/frio, lluvioso/seco; debe ser capaz de realizar movimientos repetitivos tales como raspando, lijando y paleando.
