Position Description
The Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science at The University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas) invites applications for two faculty positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Systems Engineering ( SYSE ).
Qualified candidates must have a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, and active (or the potential to develop) externally funded research.
Applicants at the Associate Professor level must demonstrate a strong track record of scholarly and professional achievements.
The appointment commences for the fall 2026 semester.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience: A PhD degree or equivalent in Systems Engineering, or a discipline related to Systems Engineering, such as Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or Mathematics is required prior to employment.
Applicants at the Associate Professor level should have a record of accomplishments commensurate with that rank.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives.
We are seeking candidates able to produce research and scholarly or creative achievements that enhance the program and the discipline, and able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.
Preferred Education and Experience: We are seeking candidates whose teaching and research interests span one or more of the fundamental areas of industrial and systems engineering, including but not limited to: systems architecture, manufacturing, systems management, risk management, and requirements engineering.
Exceptionally strong candidates with research and teaching interests in other fields of systems engineering will also be considered for one of the two positions, including modeling and simulation, robotic/mechatronic systems, control systems, systems integration, optimization, and system design.
The Department and School
The SYSE Department currently has ten tenured/tenure-track faculty, lecturer, and research faculty members, and approximately 100 graduate students, working in diverse areas including high-precision mechatronic systems with applications in atomic-scale lithography for fabrication of solid-state quantum devices, atomically precise manufacturing and high-speed scanning probe microscopy; robotic systems and control in a variety of multidisciplinary applications; modeling, analysis and control of multiagent systems; complex networks; graph machine learning for network control applications, resilience and security in networked multiagent systems, transportation systems management and operation strategies, mathematical methods for complex networks and engineering applications.
Faculty members typically hold affiliate positions in other engineering departments and advise doctoral students in those departments.
The SYSE Department at UT Dallas is at a crossroads in its evolution, until recently having a single graduate degree program and complementary focus in research.
The fall 2025 semester saw the start and development of a new, multidisciplinary undergraduate degree program in Systems Engineering, representing an exciting opportunity for new faculty hires.
SYSE currently offers an M.S. degree in Systems Engineering and Management, a joint program with the Naveen Jindal School of Management.
Plans are also currently underway for a new doctoral program in Systems Engineering, as well as a new M.S. degree in Robotic and Mechatronic Systems.
The vision for the planned undergraduate curriculum is expressly tailored to meet the needs of modern systems engineers, providing pathways for students to select a secondary field in another discipline, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, bioengineering, computer science, or management.
To support growth and expansion to the planned undergraduate degree program, UT Dallas has committed to expanding the SYSE faculty where needed.
In addition to Systems Engineering, the Erik Jonsson School is home to the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, and Materials Science and Engineering, with interdisciplinary programs in Computer, Telecommunications and Software Engineering.
