Stanford’s Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (DAPER) is the premier intercollegiate athletic program in the country.

We are the Home of Champions and lead the nation with 138 NCAA championship titles.

We support nearly 900 student‑athletes across 36 intercollegiate teams and provide the university’s physical education, recreation and wellness initiatives.

This role inspires champions through first‑class broadcast and technical operations for Stanford Athletics home events.


Summary


Stanford Athletics seeks an Assistant Athletics Director, Broadcast & Technical Operations to lead the delivery of a first‑class television broadcast experience and oversee day‑to‑day technical operations, including video boards, audio systems, replay, and coaches film.

The successful candidate will be self‑motivated, team‑oriented, organized, and able to orchestrate live event production.

The role includes coordinating all live event broadcasts of Stanford Athletics home events and assisting with in‑game production elements.

The position collaborates with internal and external stakeholders, including facility and operations, marketing, communications, fan experience, ESPN, the ACC, campus organizations, vendors, and other partners to ensure an optimal event viewing experience.

Responsibilities include design, development, execution, and staffing of the broadcast production room and in‑venue video boards.

Staffing will include a mix of full‑time and part‑time staff working with the ACC and ESPN.

Reporting to the Associate Athletics Director, Operations and Events, the position will oversee a staff of eight to start, plus rotating contingent staff.


Duties and Responsibilities



  • Broadcast Operations

    • Collaborate with campus staff, consultants, and external partners on the design, integration, and execution of the department’s Production Control Room.

    • Work with the ACC and ESPN on requirements, event schedules, and production needs to meet desired outcomes.

    • Oversee production of live event broadcasts across linear, digital, and in‑venue displays.

    • Coordinate and supervise training and development of full‑ and part‑time staff in control room and production techniques.

    • Oversee scheduling and staffing for broadcasting and videoboard operations at events.

    • Assist in identifying, recruiting, developing, training, and scheduling on‑air talent for each broadcast.

    • Develop and lead a team of full‑time and part‑time broadcast professionals, engineers, and game‑day operators/freelancers; conduct ongoing reviews of budgeting and staffing plans; oversee recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating personnel and service providers.

    • Maintain technical knowledge to meet the specifications of conference and department partners.

    • Ensure equipment readiness and event coverage through scheduling and communication.

    • Serve in production room roles as needed, including producer and director.



  • Video Board Production

    • Serve as the main point of contact with the production team for planning and executing live events using venue video boards and online streams, including contract deliverables.

    • Maintain video boards to be operational at all times for athletics events.

    • Assist with campus events, venue rentals, and broadcasts for local and national television.

    • Co‑lead on physical video board needs, acquisitions, and replacements with facilities and capital projects teams.

    • Oversee staffing to operate video boards effectively.



  • Financial and Asset Management

    • Oversee the financial budget for daily operations, equipment, staffing, and maintenance.

    • Follow campus and department procurement guidelines with transparency and defined financial parameters.

    • Develop an equipment inventory and lifecycle replacement plan for production room and video board assets, especially capital purchases.

    • Assist in annual and long‑term budget planning, including space, large item replacements, and end‑of‑life needs.

    • Oversee all assets related to venue video boards and scoreboards in athletic facilities and in the production control room.



  • Administrative

    • Align department vision and goals with production elements to showcase student‑athletes, programs, the department, campus, and conference.

    • Develop policies, procedures, and protocols reflecting industry best practices for live broadcasts and video board production.

    • Hire, train, and manage direct reports; stay current with technological trends affecting operations.

    • Serve as a point person for technical operations and capital projects within athletic facilities (video boards and control room).

    • Assist with payroll submission and reconciliation for event staffing.

    • Participate in training on the latest venue and broadcast technologies; liaise with university and external production staff as needed for live broadcasts.

    • Collaborate with content creation, IT, Operations, and other groups to resolve problems and support their needs.

    • Responsible for upgrades and maintenance checks on Daktronics systems and related control room equipment.



  • Other Duties

    • Staffing for other department events as needed and additional broadcasts of department or campus events.

    • Duties as assigned.




Qualifications



  • 5–7 years of experience in the video industry, including television broadcast, live streaming, and video board production.

  • Bachelor's degree or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Experience integrating, implementing, or refreshing an arena/venue broadcast control room is a plus.

  • Expert understanding of broadcast control rooms, staffing for live event production, equipment maintenance, and purchasing.

  • Familiarity with modern broadcast cabling infrastructure.

  • Managerial experience in a broadcast control room setting.

  • Ability to discuss product vision with network staff and department leaders given resources.

  • Experience leading production and freelance staff and gameday personnel.

  • Knowledge of video board production in sports facilities and understanding of linear and digital streaming marketplaces.

  • Budget forecasting and management skills; strategic thinker with leadership ability.

  • Strong collaboration, communication, organizational, and time management skills.

  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and long shifts as needed.

  • Physical ability to stand, crouch, and lift up to 25 pounds; knowledge of AV systems, cameras, non‑linear editing, audio, video, and lighting control systems.

  • Experience supporting game presentation elements and fan experience staff.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines; knowledge of current and emergent AV technologies.

This position, along with all DAPER coaches and staff, is responsible for the integrity of Stanford’s intercollegiate athletics program and for the reputation of Stanford University.

This position must comply with University policies, NCAA and Pac‑12 rules and regulations.


The expected pay range for this position is $127,451 to $130,000 per annum.

Stanford provides pay ranges as a good faith estimate of compensation.

The final offer will depend on scope, qualifications, budget, equity, location, and market factors.
