Reporting to the Dean for Teaching and Learning, the Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning supports the strategic direction and implementation of faculty development initiatives, instructional design integration, and innovative course delivery across all teaching modalities.
The Assistant Dean provides support to full-time and adjunct faculty at all stages of their careers, with a strong emphasis on inclusive, equity-minded pedagogy and high-impact teaching practices (HIPs), such as learning communities, Competency-Based Education (CBE), and undergraduate research.
In partnership with faculty development coordinators and instructional designers, the Assistant Dean helps faculty design accessible, outcomes-aligned courses that promote student success.
This position directly supervises the part-time Adjunct Faculty Coordinator and supports efforts to improve engagement and ongoing development opportunities for adjunct faculty.
Responsibilities
In collaboration with the Dean, the Assistant Dean contributes to ensuring the quality and consistency of online, hybrid, and flexible learning programs.
While the technical operations of the Learning Management System (LMS) are overseen by theInformation Technology department, the Assistant Dean ensures the LMS and related technologies are effectively leveraged to support inclusive, high-quality teaching and foster meaningful, student-centered learning experiences.
The Assistant Dean, in collaboration with the Dean, will help to lead efforts to integrate data- informed decision making within the Division of Teaching and Learning.
This includes but is not limited to: collecting and analyzing institutional and instructional data, identifying trends and gaps to inform curriculum development, instructional strategies, as well as using predictive analytics and benchmarking to anticipate future need and guide resource allocation.
The Assistant Dean also contributes to planning, scheduling, and operations within the Division of Teaching and Learning and fosters a culture of continuous improvement in instructional excellence.
Supervise and support the part-time Adjunct Faculty Coordinator, with a focus on strengthening adjunct faculty engagement, connection to college resources, and participation in professional development.
Provide leadership for reviewing and implementing new instructional technologies and effective strategies for online, hybrid and other flexible learning modalities.
Responsible for the performance assessment of adjunct faculty through observations and evaluations in accordance with college policy and the adjunct faculty collective bargaining agreement.
Collaborate with instructional designers to support faculty in designing accessible, outcomes-aligned courses that promote student engagement and success.
Coordinate and implement faculty training and professional learning programs, with an emphasis on instructional innovation, flexible delivery, and continuous improvement.
Support instructional technology initiatives that enhance online, hybrid, and flexible learning environments, in collaboration with faculty and IT stakeholders.
Evaluate faculty development needs and assess the impact of teaching and learning initiatives on student outcomes, retention, and academic achievement using data.
Promote consistent instructional quality by supporting compliance with accreditation standards, distance education policies, and accessibility requirements.
Serve as a college liaison to external organizations, including the Illinois Community College Online (ILCCO) consortium and the
Midwest State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (M-SARA).
Manage vendor relationships for instructional technologies and faculty development resources (e.g., Canvas, Kaltura, Quality Matters, ACUE).
Collaborate with Waubonsee's Digital Services Coordinator in providing faculty development in the use of Open Educational Resources.
Contribute to strategic planning, scheduling, and operational support within the Division of Teaching and Learning.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in related field required.
Formal training in Educational/Instructional Technology and/or Instructional Design or Curriculum Development preferred.
Minimum of three years of experience in higher education, specifically in faculty development, instructional design, curriculum development, or related teaching and learning roles.
At least two years must include direct experience with distance or online learning programs.
Two years supervisory or project management experience required.
Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in online teaching, learning design, and the effective use of instructional technologies.
Proficiency with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) required.
Experience using a variety of educational technology tools and platforms to support instructional effectiveness.
Experience with maintaining accessibility requirements, such as ADA Section 508, universal design strategies in online or hybrid learning required.
Excellent communication, project management, collaboration, and analytical skills.
