Assistant Director of TRIO Student Support Services (SSS)



Job description

The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded grant program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.

The mission of the SSS Program is to provide comprehensive academic support services that increase the retention and graduation rates of eligible undergraduate participants
by fostering academic success in a supportive educational and holistic advising environment at Simpson University.

The SSS Program at Simpson University serves a minimum of 150 participants.


Primary responsibilities include planning and administrating academic support programs and services as well as supervising student support staff.

These services include but are not limited to career services, financial literacy, workshops, success coaching, and other activities/events related to improving student participants' graduation and retention rates.



Qualifications


1. Bachelor’s degree or higher in education, student affairs, student personnel administration, counseling, psychology or related field.


2. Four years of experience preferred working directly with undergraduates, particularly low income, first-generation college students and/or college students with disabilities


3. Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, in addition to the ability to use computer applications.


4. Proficient with Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, etc.)


5. The Assistant Director should demonstrate knowledge of and sensitivity to undergraduates from diverse cultural, economic and academic backgrounds.


6. Ability to work as a team member and leader.


7. Strong problem solving and planning skills.


8. Preference will be given to individuals who have succeeded in overcoming the disadvantages and circumstances like those of the targeted population.

Essential Functions:



Program Building


  1. Work with the Director to design and build the program’s infrastructure and processes in accordance with the grant’s specifications.
  2. Work with the Director to recruit eligible students to participate in the program
  3. Interview and screen applicants to ensure eligibility as well as “good fit” for the program
  4. Conduct a series of academic, financial and personal development assessments to identify students’ needs for assistance through the program.
  5. Create Individual Plans of Action with students to help them stay on track with their academic, financial, and personal development goals.

  6. Track and record progress of students in accordance with grant requirements.
  7. Gather and record program data as required by grant requirements

Academic Advising


  1. Provide students with academic advising through small groups and one-on-one advising, including but not limited to, assistance with orientation, registration, course selection, prerequisites, etc.
  2. Assist students with selecting and declaring their major including but not limited to providing accurate information about degree requirements and individual action plan to ensure on-time graduation.
  3. Monitor student's academic progress, utilizing early alert systems to identify any student’s that might be struggling.

  4. Connect students with appropriate academic resources to ensure they remain on track.
  5. Develop and facilitate programs to advise students on attending graduate school including program selection, application process and financial aid assistance.

  6. Some travel (including overnight travel) may be required.

Personal, Social, Spiritual Development


  1. Demonstrate an active Christian commitment, serving as a counselor, advisor, role model and facilitator of student’s personal, social and spiritual development.
  2. Develop and administer programs, workshops and events to build community ensuring students have a sense of belonging.
  3. Conduct small group and one-on-one sessions as it pertains to student’s personal, social and spiritual development.
