Job description

The Assistant Director for Orientation Programs provides leadership and visioning for the coordination of all undergraduate orientation programming, assessment of programs, and student staff recruitment, selection, training and supervision.

Additionally, the Assistant Director supports the units growth and enrichment in alignment with the Universitys Strategic Plan, , and Student Success Initiatives.

This position reports directly to the Director, Orientation and Transition Programs.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Business, Social Sciences, Applied Human Sciences, Liberal Arts or related field

  • Four years of full-time, professional experience in a higher education setting working with students, supervising and program planning

  • Demonstrated leadership and experience in a higher education setting working with orientation and transition programs designed to increase student engagement, retention and success

  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing student staff training and supervision

  • Demonstrated experience working with a variety of populations across a breadth of diverse identities
  • Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Masters Degree (degree in student affairs, higher education or related fields)

  • Two years of full-time, professional experience working with new student orientation programs for various populations (first-year, transfer, international)

  • Demonstrated experience with large-scale university-wide programs and initiatives

  • Demonstrated experience with a variety of formats for orientation programming for new students (in person, online/virtual, etc.)

  • Demonstrated experience supervising professional staff

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with academic departments, student services and strategic campus partners

  • Excellent communication skills, including interpersonal communication, presentation, facilitation and writing skills

  • Demonstrated experience with budget management

  • Knowledge of student development theory and demonstrated application to new student orientation programming, student staff training and/or supervision

  • Experience developing and implementing learning outcomes and program assessment

  • Strong organizational skills
  • Essential Duties Job Duty Category Supervision and Training Duty/Responsibility
  • Supervise, train and evaluate the full-time, professional Coordinator for Orientation Programs.

    Includes recruitment, making hiring decisions, on-board/training, supervision, conducting mid-year and end-of year performance evaluations, and regular meetings and communication with supervisee.

  • Indirect supervision of Orientation Leaders who work first-year Ram Orientation programming (direct supervision from Coordinator).

  • Work collaboratively with Orientation and Transition Programs staff and campus partners to provide vision, leadership and administration of all new student orientation programs for students including First-Year Student Orientation, Transfer Student Orientation, International Student Orientation, and Online Orientation.

  • Serve as the primary coordinator for First-Year Student Orientation and Transfer Student Orientation programs including collaborating with campus partners and students to solicit and gather feedback on the programs, planning the overall orientation schedules including determining space/catering requirements, scheduling all presenters for various educational sessions, and all other program logistics; creating and implementing student staffing structure for all orientation programs; and communicating clearly with all presenters and other campus partners involved within orientation programs.

  • Plan, implement, and coordinate marketing efforts and publications for all orientation programs including website content management and design and coordinating all print publications; ensures consistency of publications with university branding.

  • Develop and implement learning outcomes, assessment and evaluation methods and data reporting structure for all new student orientation programs.

  • Proactively examine and evaluate university initiatives and national trends for new student orientation programming to enhance the resources and services provided to new students.

  • Works with the Program Manager to develop and implement the reservation system and customer experience for orientation programs.

  • Serve as a member of the OTP Leadership Team with the Director and other Assistant Directors.

  • Serve as an effective and contributing team member through open communication and support of co-workers as well as of OTP programs and overall office goals and priorities.

  • Develops and maintains partnerships, relationships and collaborations with areas across the entire university to align strategic priorities with serving all new university students, families and supporters through orientation programs.

  • Collaborate with campus partners on the academic advising/registration process as part of first-year, transfer, online, and international onboarding experience, which includes (but is not limited to) meeting regularly with academic advisors and academic colleges to seek input and feedback, communicating regularly with academic advisors across campus.

  • Responds to complex problems involving multiple stakeholders including internal and external university constituents daily in relation to the experiences new students and their guests have as they plan their transition to the university.

  • Works with campus partners to streamline, troubleshoot and implement comprehensive communication plans to new students and families.

  • Aligns outcomes of new student orientation programs to university retention, persistence and graduation efforts.

  • Represent the unit on campus-wide committees that relate to the first year or transfer student experience on campus.

  • Provide input into the budgeting process for multiple new student orientation programs, student staff training and salaries, and publications.

    Budget management includes tracking expenditures, reallocating finds and determining future projections with Director.
