Assistant Director/Associate Director/Director of Academic Support and Bar Exam Preparation

Job Summary

SLU LAW is searching for applicants for the role of Assistant Director, Associate Director, or Director of Academic Support and Bar Examination Preparation.

The successful candidate will: support the work of the Academic Resource Center to train law students for the rigor of law school, the bar exam, and the practice of law with academic workshops, courses, and individual coaching; work closely with the Assistant Dean of Teaching and Learning, other faculty, and staff to enhance the learning and study skills of all students in both the daytime and part-time evening programs, with an emphasis on at-risk students; and develop and present academic success and bar support workshops, teach and support substantive bar-preparation courses and/or courses that provide academic and law-specific skill development, supervise teaching fellows, and provide individual tutoring throughout law school and preparation for the bar exam.

The position is a 12-month, non-tenure track faculty appointment.

Entering rank is dependent on experience and qualifications.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Teaching and Learning in developing and administering the academic support and bar exam preparation program as needed.

    This includes organizing and presenting specialized materials, workshops, and programs for students and faculty, including summer bar support programming; and teaching and supporting substantive bar-preparation courses and/or courses that provide academic and law-specific skill development.

    This also includes researching and keeping abreast of latest developments in ASP pedagogy, learning theories, technologies, and scholastic literature.

  • Meet individually with students to identify areas in need of improvement and to develop plans based on each student’s specific needs and abilities.

    Provide in-depth feedback and guidance on areas such as analytical writing skills, time management, and other skills that assist law students in achieving a high level of academic performance.

  • Collect, analyze, and interpret both hard and narrative data relating to students’ pre-law school academic background, law school performance, and bar passage.

  • Help track and report information regarding bar passage and serve on faculty committees as assigned by the Dean.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean.

  • Minimum Qualifications

  • A Juris Doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school.

  • License to practice law in at least one state or the District of Columbia.

  • Prior academic or bar support experience, or a suitable record of professional experience in legal practice, training, and/or teaching.

  • Superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, with special aptitude for patience and positive motivation.

  • Proficiency at project management, including, but not limited to, developing, planning, and implementing goals.

  • Commitment to working with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

  • Sensitivity to students with varied learning styles, disabilities, and backgrounds.

  • Ability to collect, interpret, and analyze data.

  • Working knowledge of the Uniform Bar Exam and the NextGen Bar Exam.

  • Knowledge of educational theories and learning styles.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with technology, and the ability to acquire proficiency with new technology quickly.
