Job description

The Career and Professional Development Center (CPDC) at Carnegie Mellon University is a nationally recognized, centralized career services hub providing innovative support across career exploration, professional development, experiential learning, and employment assistance.

We are seeking a motivated, strategic professional to serve as Assistant Director/Career Consultant for Early Career Development.

This position is ideal for someone passionate about student success and energized by a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Reporting to the Director of Student Employment and Early Career Development, the Assistant Director will design and deliver programming for first- and second-year students while also supporting student employment initiatives across campus.

Approximately half of your time will be spent providing individual and group career coaching for undergraduate students using CPDC’s Assess-Brand-Connect framework.

You’ll create and deliver engaging content through a variety of platforms, including workshops, online modules, and campus events.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Provide early career advising and job search support to undergraduate students, particularly first-years and sophomores.

  • Create and deliver programming and digital content supporting early undergraduate career engagement, career exploration and assessment.

  • Establish strong partnerships with faculty, staff, and student employment supervisors across campus.

  • Coordinate initiatives to improve the on-campus student employment experience, including developing job description libraries, promoting job posting standard methodologies, and providing supervisor training.

  • Enhance the CMU-GROW (Guided Reflection on Work) coaching program to support student career-readiness and competency development through on-campus employment.

  • Plan and implement campus-wide events to promote early career engagement, supervisor forums, and student employment appreciation.

  • Produce communications about federal work-study to improve understanding and usage.

  • Cultivate and manage relationships with nonprofit organizations that hire CMU students through our federal community service work-study program.

  • Contribute to department-wide efforts and other duties as assigned.

  • Entrepreneurial approach and dedication to service excellence.

  • Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred.

  • Minimum 1-3 years of experience in college student development, career services, advising, recruiting, or HR required

  • Experience with Handshake, Canvas, and other career-related and educational software platforms preferred.

  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM–5:00 PM, with occasional evenings/weekends as needed.
