Job description

Other Conditions: 

To begin August 2026, or as soon thereafter as possible.

Applicants who are ABD will be considered; however, degree requirements must be met by the effective date of appointment.

Official transcripts or equivalent documents from the institution confirming the highest educational degree relevant to this position are required upon hire.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach at graduate and undergraduate levels in courses, both on campus and online;
  • Teach courses related to aging, long-term care, social work, public health, or related field;
  • Conduct externally-funded research and scholarly activity with relevance to older adults populations in Hawai‘i and/or the Asia and the Pacific regions;
  • Seek extramural funding; 
  • Publish in peer-reviewed journals;
  • Serve as academic advisor to students, supervise independent study research activities, and participate on committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees;
  • Render service to the profession and community relevant to academic/research specialty;
  • Serve on center, school, and university committees;
  • Participate in curriculum development and utilize technology innovations in program curricular activities;
  • Participate in relevant center, school, and university meetings;
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in gerontology, social work, public health, psychology, sociology, economics, human development, or related field from a college or university with recognized standing;
  • Demonstrated proficiency as an educator and mentor; 
  • Demonstrated expertise in aging research, with a track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals;
  • Strong commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and community engagement with aging networks, older adults, and caregivers;
  • Poise and pleasant attitude for meeting and collaborating with others.

  • Desirable Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated experience in working with community partners in aging and social services to promote healthy aging and minimize health disparities;
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize one’s personal and professional experiences working with older adults and apply it to the classroom setting;
  • Scholarly work focused on gerontology that contributes to the mission of the Thompson School and University to create and disseminate new knowledge to increase social justice with special attention to Native Hawaiian, other Pacific Islander, Asian, and/or other underrepresented populations;
  • Successful record in, or demonstrated potential for, securing extramural funding; 
  • Strong commitment to, knowledge of, and/or experience with the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa mission and purpose of positioning the university as a leading Indigenous-serving higher education institution and commitment to decolonizing approach and Hawaiian place of learning;
  • History of teaching graduate and undergraduate gerontology courses;
  • Demonstrated ability to use instructional technology in teaching.
