Job Description:
The Department of History at the University of Florida, College of Liberal Arts
and Sciences, invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, tenure-accruing
position at the rank of assistant professor, beginning August , 6, in the
field of nineteenth and early th century Brazil.
The ideal hire should be able to contribute to the History
Department’s intellectual growth and emphasis on interdisciplinary and
collaborative research.
Areas of specialization might include abolition,
Indigenous histories, health and medicine, labor, culture, or diaspora.
We
welcome candidates whose research employs methodologies that complement
the department’s strengths in cultural, intellectual, and legal history.
We also
welcome applicants who incorporate digital history into their scholarship, public
engagement, or teaching.
The appointee will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment
to teaching a diverse body of undergraduate and graduate students in
Gainesville, Florida, and maintain a robust research and publishing agenda
commensurate with a Research 1 institution.
Teaching responsibilities include
introductory, upper-division, and graduate courses in Brazilian history.
Equally
important is the ability to contribute effectively to the department’s graduate
program: mentoring graduate students, offering graduate seminars, and
chairing and serving on graduate committees (including serving on committees
in other departments).
The faculty member in this role will be able to take advantage of the UF Libraries’
outstanding Latin American collections, and will have the opportunity to benefit
from the support, resources and activities of relevant programs on campus,
including: the Center for Latin American Studies, Center for African Studies,
Center for Arts, Migration and Entrepreneurship, the Center for Humanities and
the Public Sphere, and the Florida-Brazil Linkage Institute (FBLI).
UF is also
home to a robust Portuguese language and literature program, and an active
Brazilian Student Association.
