Position Title:Assistant Professor of Economics of Crop Management and Markets

Job Description:
The Department of Economics seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Agricultural Economics.

This position is one of six positions in a cluster hire that will have research and teaching responsibilities, along with affiliations with the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) and the Iowa State Extension farm management team.

The approximate division of responsibilities for this position is 62% extension, 25% research, 8% teaching, and 5% service.

The home college for the position is the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.


The individual in this position is expected to develop a nationally recognized extension and research program in the economics of agricultural production and technology with an emphasis on farm management, agricultural and bioenergy policy, and crop marketing.

The extension program will be expected to address critical farm management issues relevant to Iowa and the U.S., including the economics of farm management and marketing, the financial impacts of federal and state agriculturally related policies, and the innovation of new production/marketing opportunities at the farm level.

The individual will maintain one or more active projects under the auspices of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station.


The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate across departments, extension units, and university centers.

The research and teaching activities are envisioned to be synergistic with the extension activities.

A natural outcome of these activities will be applied extension materials targeting producers, agribusiness professionals, and other relevant groups; original research in agricultural economics leading to publications in appropriate refereed journals and other professional outlets; and presentations at professional conferences.

The successful candidate will be expected to generate extramural funds to support extension and research activities.

Opportunities will exist to direct graduate student research and serve on graduate academic plan committees.

The candidate will also possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The teaching assignment is expected to be approximately one course per year.




Required Minimum Qualifications:
+ Ph.D. in Economics, Agricultural Economics or related field

Preferred Qualifications:
+ Strong training in microeconomics and quantitative methods
+ Strong evidence of research interests in one or more of the following fields: agricultural production, crop management, crop marketing, agricultural and/or bioenergy policy, environmental economics, resource economics, and/or agricultural finance
+ Demonstrated ability to communicate economic ideas in public forums
+ Demonstrated potential for accomplishment in extension and outreach
+ Demonstrated potential for accomplishment in college teaching
+ Demonstrated potential for accomplishment in research


Department/Program & College Description:
The Department of Economics, with approximately 35 faculty, has a long tradition of excellence in education, research, and engagement with the community.

Our undergraduate program is the academic home to about 500 students in three different majors.

Our graduate program offers M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in economics and agricultural economics, and has placed graduates in vital positions in academia, government, and industry throughout the world.

Faculty research covers a broad spectrum ranging from theoretical analyses to applied policy studies.

The department is jointly administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
