Urgent! Assistant Professor of Mathematics Job Opening In Waterville ME – Now Hiring Colby College

Assistant Professor of Mathematics

Job description

We have a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Mathematics beginning July 1, 2026.

The Department seeks an exceptional and creative teacher with an established and active research program.

All fields of mathematics will be considered, but preference will be given to candidates with broad expertise and sustained interest in the areas that complement current research directions in the department, are suitable for undergraduate research experiences, and can support the emerging computational and engineering initiatives of the college.

Candidates must have received a Ph.D. in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics, and should have completed at least one year of either a full-time teaching position in mathematics or a research-oriented postdoctoral position in mathematics with a significant teaching component.

Established familiarity with the US undergraduate mathematics education system is essential.

Applicants must be able to demonstrate a strong research trajectory, a record of teaching excellence, and a commitment to mentoring undergraduates in a liberal arts setting.

The teaching responsibility is alternating 5 (3-2) and 4 (2-2) courses per year, with a research sabbatical leave prior to tenure review of a full year at 80% salary or of one semester at full salary.

To facilitate the transition, new full-time tenure-track Assistant Professors receive start-up funding to support their research and professional development and often have a one-course reduction in their first year of teaching (i.e. 2-2).

To apply, please provide all of the following: ● cover letter, which addresses your specific reasons for seeking a position at Colby, which is an undergraduate liberal arts institution; ● CV; ● two-page statement on teaching, describing practical pedagogical strategies and concrete experiences of their implementation in introductory courses; ● official summary evaluation sheets from all of the courses taught during the past three (3) academic years; ● concise statement specifically aimed at Colby mathematicians outlining your research program; ● a sample of current scholarship; ● at least four (4) letters of recommendation submitted directly by the recommenders, at least two (2) of which should focus on the particulars of your teaching and mentoring experience, and at least two (2) – on your research activities.

All materials should be submitted online at [www.mathjobs.org](https://www.mathjobs.org/jobs/417/TTMATH2026).

Review of complete applications will begin on October 20, 2025.

Some late applications may be considered in extraordinary circumstances.

Candidates who are selected for the short list will be asked to participate in a Zoom interview in early November.

The finalists will be invited to campus for on-site interviews, and we expect to be able to extend an offer to a successful candidate in early to mid-December.
