Job description

The University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Neurology, is seeking a M.D. or M.D., Ph.D. new faculty hire at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with fellowship training in cognitive neurology and dementia.

A career path in translational research is preferred but not required .

The candidate should have completed accredited neurology residency training and be clinically trained in cognitive neurology.

Candidates should be interested in the evaluation, care, and treatment of patients with dementia including Alzheimer's disease (AD), vascular dementia and Fronto-temporal dementia (FTD).

They will work with colleagues in our Movement Disorders Division who evaluate patients with Parkinson's disease, diffuse Lewy Body disease, and hereditary ataxias.

Interested applicants should have a desire to participate in teaching and training medical students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows.

All applicants should have completed fellowship training in Cognitive Neurology and be board eligible/certified.

Potential start-up package is possible for translational clinician-scientist applicants with an interest in the molecular and cellular pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders, in particular dementias.

Areas of expertise might include gene expression in either human blood or brain specimens using RNASeq, oligonucleotide arrays, or transgenic system approaches; proteomics and broad based protein analyses such as post-translational modification, e.g., protein phosphorylation or glycosylation; analysis of tau, amyloid precursor protein (APP), the secretases, Huntingtin, and pathways of apoptosis and autophagy; the role of the inflammation in neurodegeneration with interests in microglial activation, cytokines, immune activation and astroglial biology; mouse models of neurodegeneration including mutant tau isoforms, mutant APP, or mutant Huntingtin, conditional knockout models of neurodegeneration, and use of shRNA or CRISPR/Cas9 to model neurodegenerative disorders; expertise in high throughput drug screening or discovery, using in vitro or in vivo systems.

Clinician-scientists should have a pathway towards independent funding.

The referenced salary range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank.

This salary range does not include all components of the Department of Neurology faculty compensation program or pay from participation in Department of Neurology variable compensation programs.

Therefore, the actual compensation paid to the selected candidate may vary from the salary range stated herein.

The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s good faith belief at the time of posting.

Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range.

The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the University.
