Assistant/Associate/Full Professor Health Programs

Job description

Working/Functional Title
Assistant/Associate/Full Professor Health Programs
Position Summary
Veterinary Clinical Pathologist

The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications from motivated individuals to join our team of six clinical pathology faculty and four residents within the Department of Pathobiology and Diagnostic Investigation (PDI) and Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL).

The appointment will be in the Health Programs (HP) Faculty Appointment System (clinical track).

The successful applicant will be expected to enhance the service, education, and research missions of the CVM and VDL.

Applicants must have a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree as well as board certification or eligibility by the American or European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP or ECVP).

Cultural and social competence and excellent written and interpersonal skills, including the ability to relate complex concepts to diverse audiences, are required.

The main focus of this position is diagnostic service, including being responsible for reviewing samples and writing reports in the diagnostic laboratory, training residents, and development of diagnostic assays.

Therefore, the appointed individual must have a strong commitment to providing outstanding professional diagnostic service for the CVM Veterinary Medical Center (VMC), private veterinary general practitioners, specialty clinics, and other MSU VDL clients, as well as a commitment to resident instruction.

Development of diagnostic assays is strongly preferred but not required and is aimed to support the diagnostic mission of the clinical pathology section and the MSU VDL.

Preference will be given to candidates with an interest in developing commercial assays for the flow cytometer housed in our clinical pathology laboratory.

Prior flow cytometry experience is desired but not required as training in this skill can be provided if needed.

A secondary focus of this position is preclinical and/or clinical instruction of DVM students as well as advising, mentoring, and didactic training of pathology residents and graduate students.

Therefore, interest in teaching is required and prior experience is preferred.

Scholarly activity, although a small component of this position, is expected and can be related to any of the major efforts of this position or collaborative research.

Opportunities abound for the candidate to participate in many exciting collaborative and interdisciplinary research areas through MSU’s strong focus on comparative medicine and One Health.

Additional opportunities for collaboration exist close by at the University of Michigan, Van Andel Research Institute, and other research centers.

Intramural funding for research projects is excellent, including a competitive research grant program in the CVM, and the clinical pathology section has dedicated research support staff.

Distribution of efforts is negotiable and can be flexible to match the candidate’s interests.

Work hours can be flexible depending on section needs.

There is an expectation to cover diagnostic service during one out of every 7 weekends and one out of 7 university holidays (i.e., taking turns with the other 6 faculty members).

Faculty are not scheduled to be on call for diagnostic service in the evenings or overnight.

Full-time faculty benefits include one month of vacation in 12 months (22 working days) plus 2 personal observance days and approximately 12-14 university holiday days/year (https://hr.msu.edu/time-off-leave/holiday-schedule.html) .

MSU offers a uniquely superior retirement plan including a 10% university match for a 5% employee contribution toward the 403(b) program (https://hr.msu.edu/benefits/retirement/403b-base.html) .

Other benefits include health insurance and access to optional insurance at discounted university rates (including dental, vision, life, pet, home, and auto), subsidized backup/emergency childcare (https://studentparents.msu.edu/family-resources/sick-child-care/) , and waitlist preference for MSU’s Spartan Child Development Center (https://scdc.msu.edu/prospective-families/waitlist) .

The MSU CVM is a major referral center for companion animals as well as livestock, laboratory, zoo, and wildlife species.

It has outstanding veterinary medical professionals and facilities, offering an exceptional environment for professional growth and advancement in clinical pathology.

The VDL is one of the premier veterinary diagnostic laboratories in the United States, providing full-service laboratory support to MSU VMC, national, and international clients.

The laboratory has state-of-the-art equipment including a Siemens ADVIA hematology analyzer, Beckman Coulter chemistry analyzer, Nova Prime blood gas/critical care analyzer, STA Satellite coagulation analyzer, and Attune NxT flow cytometer.

The MSU VDL has a large, well- established residency program in clinical and anatomic pathology with a strong board certification pass rate, which allows faculty to participate in training the next generation of veterinary pathologists.
