Job Title: Associate Editor


FT/PT, FLSA Status: Full-time, Exempt


Supervisor: Editor in Chief


Job Posting Salary: $60,000-$75,000/year


General Summary


The Associate Editor role combines reporting, writing and editing.

This is an opportunity for a gifted writer and editor to do their best work—to report and write engaging stories on a wide range of subjects, gorgeously presented in print and online, for a discerning audience of approximately 270,000 University of Virginia alumni around the world.

The Associate Editor contributes to Virginia Magazine and related digital platforms, doing so with a depth, sophistication, wit, and style befitting our audience and our editorial mission.

The Associate Editor develops a range of content, from major features to news reports to data stories to alternative forms of storytelling.


Story-idea generation and beat development make up an important part of the responsibilities.

The Associate Editor needs to develop an intimate understanding of UVA—its culture, values, history and traditions; student life; its academic world; its management and administration; and especially its alumni and how they are best served in the magazine.

This person will have oversight of regularly occurring sections of the magazine.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities



  • Reporting, writing and editing a range of stories, from major features to articles and items of all sizes across all platforms, print, digital and social

  • Writing and editing stories in a range of topics and styles, including data reporting, research reporting, narrative and historical

  • Overall responsibility for specific sections of the magazine

  • Story generation and planning, including visual planning, for our quarterly print magazine and our regularly updated and ever-expanding digital platforms

  • Works closely with creative team and other editors on design issues and article layouts; and with videographers to help create videos

  • Comfort in using data in reporting, writing and editing stories

  • Other duties as assigned and as strategic priorities evolve


Education



  • Bachelor’s Degree with preference for candidates who majored in journalism or English or the humanities.


Experience



  • 5-7 years of meaningful experience in journalism or publishing, ideally features or magazines

  • Must have a broad understanding of print and online publishing

  • Good working knowledge of the University of Virginia or experience working in a university setting


Skills/Certifications



  • Highly polished writing and storytelling skills

  • Good news instincts, story judgment, and a reporter’s curiosity

  • Highly developed research and newsgathering skills, including superior interview skills

  • Well-developed story development and line-editing skills

  • General computer proficiency and Web knowledge


Supervision


None, other than occasions of managing freelance contributors


Abilities



  • Must be self-directed and rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals

  • Strong interpersonal skills required

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Must be a good listener and astute interviewer

  • Must have the ability to work in a collaborative group setting as well as independently

  • Must have the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work efficiently under deadline pressure


Environmental/Working Conditions


Fast-paced hybrid work environment with a minimum of 2+ days in the office each week and the remaining days working from home.

This job is based in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
