Position Overview


The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) provides essential support to licensed nursing staff in delivering safe, compassionate, and competent care to patients.

Starting compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and internal equity, beginning at $17.87 /hour.

  • Compensation is commensurate upon education & experience - range is 17.87 /hour or more (depending on education & experience).

    Benefits begin the first of the month following 60 days of employment from the new hire orientation date.

    This position is a non-exempt position.

Key Responsibilities



  • Assist licensed nurses in delivering safe and effective patient care within the scope of practice.

  • Foster a respectful, dignified, and compassionate environment for patients, families, and staff.

  • Communicate effectively with patients, colleagues, physicians, and leadership to achieve quality outcomes.

  • Adhere to ARHS policies, regulatory requirements, and standards of behavior to support patient safety and satisfaction.

  • Support team members and assist in various clinical and non-clinical tasks as directed by licensed nurses.



Position Requirements


Minimum Education:



  • High school diploma or GED required.


Experience:



  • Previous experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.


Required Registration/License/Certification:



  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (required at hire).

  • Current North Carolina CNA certification (preferred).

  • CPI certification is required within one year of hire.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:



  • Familiarity with the scope of practice for Behavioral Health Technicians.

  • Strong communication skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and team members.

  • Competency in delivering safe patient care following hospital policies and procedures.

  • Basic computer skills, including data entry and EMR usage.

  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service and team collaboration.



Physical Demands



  • Frequent lifting, positioning, and transferring of patients over 50 pounds.

  • Prolonged standing, walking, and occasional sitting for extended periods.

  • Manual dexterity and the ability to perform repetitive hand, finger, and wrist movements.

  • Regular bending, squatting, twisting, and reaching.



Working Conditions



  • Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and hazardous materials.

  • Risk of injury from electrical, mechanical, or power equipment.

  • Frequent irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Continuous mobility and physical engagement for shifts lasting 8+ hours.
