Business Unit/Role Specific Information

The American Express business has two core types of customers.

The Card Members that use our cards to make purchases, and the businesses that accept them.

In Global Merchant & Network Services, we primarily focus on the businesses that accept our cards.

We bring together the businesses that manage and evolve the company’s relationships with the millions of merchants around the world that accept American Express, as well as the team that runs the company’s payment network and manages bank partnerships globally.

We are expanding global acceptance of our cards, driving greater usage of our network, leveraging our modern capabilities to capture broader revenue streams, and driving innovation both in-house and with partners.

  • We have 140+ million cards in force, that perform 12 billion transactions per year and contribute more than $1.5 trillion in network volume 
  • We have 190+ partners who either issue cards on our network, and/or sign new businesses to accept Amex on our behalf 
  • Business Operations drives our operational risk and control strategy for the Merchant Services U.S. business, contributing our efforts to uplift our strong risk management culture here within Global Merchant & Network Services.

    How will you make an impact in this role?

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the merchant business and its needs.
  • Assist in specific areas of execution plans for operational risk management within the business, including business specific guidelines, project plans, etc.
  •  Assist in the development of portions of BU-specific procedures and additional standards (i.e., escalation protocols), related to the execution of the Operational Risk Management programs.
  • Help facilitate the understanding and use of the risk governance framework basics across BUs through regular communication.
  •  Support the day-to-day internal and external exam management process, working with the Enterprise functions (e.g., data request compilation, action implementation, and regulatory adherence).
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a full-time Master’s or Graduate degree program.

  • Graduate Degree candidates with an expected graduation date between December 2026 and June 2027.
  •  Interest and experience in process governance, with an understanding of processes that align with policies, regulatory frameworks, and/or operational standards.
  • Project management experience: Superior organizational skills with the ability to autonomously manage several initiatives at once and drive results in a fast paced, multi-partner environment with constant change.
  • Effective communicator and influencer: Excellent written and oral communication skills, proficient in developing excellent quality presentations and deliverables for an executive audience.
  •  Problem solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with an ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate risk scenarios effectively.
  • Collaborative team player: Ability to collaborate within cross-functional teams.
  • Project management experience: Superior organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, delivering on deadlines and high-quality, timely outputs.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-year minimum experience in operational risk management/lifecycle activities (e.g., within Risk and/or Internal Audit function).
  • Graduate students enrolled in one of the areas below or related field: FinanceBusinessRisk Management
  • ORMCM

    Salary Range: $38.45 to $87.00 hourly + sign-on bonus
