Business Unit/Role Specific Information
Global Risk & Compliance (GRC): The Global Risk & Compliance Organization is an independent risk management function, led by the Chief Risk Officer, with the objective of ensuring that American Express operates in a safe, sound, and fully compliant manner with all applicable regulatory expectations.
Global Risk & Compliance creates and maintains the overall risk management framework, performs independent risk management assessments, and monitors applicable risks.

The Operational Risk Management (ORM) team facilitates and monitors the implementation of effective operational risk management programs throughout the company, and oversees risk ownership throughout business units, products, and processes.
Operational Risk Management: This internship offers a unique opportunity to develop broad exposure to risk management practices in a global financial services environment.
How will you make an impact in this role?
As a Summer Intern in Operational Risk Management (ORM), you will contribute to high-impact initiatives that help protect American Express from operational risks across business units, processes, and geographies.
You’ll gain hands-on experience supporting risk assessments, analyzing risk data, contributing to reporting, and working on transformation and project initiatives that strengthen the ORM function.
The ideal candidate has strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with an ability to analyze data, identify trends, and evaluate scenarios.
Support the execution of operational risk assessments and thematic reviews, helping to identify operational risks within business processes and systems.
Help evaluate and oversee the adequacy and effectiveness of risk management practices, controls, and processes across the businesses.
Assist in tracking and analyzing key risk indicators and developing reporting insights, including the aggregation and communication of operational risk reporting.
Help maintain risk dashboards, monitor key risk indicators (KRIs), and assist in compiling thematic risk reports to provide actionable insights on emerging trends and systemic risks.
Contribute to cross-functional risk initiatives that strengthen risk governance and oversight, including project management responsibilities.
Support the execution of operational risk assessments and thematic reviews, helping to identify operational risks within business processes and systems.

Minimum Qualifications
Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Finance, Economics, Business, Risk Management, Data Analytics, or a related field.
Master's degree candidates with an expected graduation date between December 2026 and June 2027.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills within a team-oriented, matrix organization.
A keen interest in operational risk management, governance, issues management, and auditing/assessing internal controls.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Familiarity with financial services or related industries is advantageous but not required.
Experience with data analysis tools (Tableau, SQL, etc.) is a plus.
Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as part of a team More than one year of prior corporate work experience is a plus.
Salary Range: $38.45 to $87.00 hourly + sign-on bonus
