Position Summary
:
Under the direction of the Quality Manager, this part-time position (= 20 hours per week) is responsible for the comprehensive coordination of casework within the morgue and laboratory operations of the Allegheny County Office of the Medical Examiner (ACOME).
Tasks are varied in nature and may include (but are not limited to) coordination of casework processing, communicating with and executing the requests of legal entities/vested parties involved in the criminal justice process, and assisting in the maintenance of the Quality System.
These tasks must be performed in accordance with the policies and procedures of the ACOME and all applicable state and federal laws.
As work experience is gained, assignments/tasks will increase in scope and complexity.
This position is not involved in the testing or analyzing items associated with casework performed by the ACOME.
Overview:
Duties:
Coordinates activity between operational areas of the ACOME to facilitate efficient and organized completion of casework assignments.Communicates with submitting agencies and legal entities to obtain required casework information.Maintains documentation pertinent to the coordination of casework, including inter and intra-agency communications.Provides administrative support functions to assist Management and designated ACOME staff.Testifies in court regarding the administrative policies and non-technical procedures of the ACOME.Facilitates the maintenance, procurement, and receipt of equipment used in casework, including but not limited to instruments, reagents, and consumables.
Documents and analyzes casework and grant statistics.Participates in the internal auditing program and maintains office-wide Quality System documentation, under the supervision of the Quality Manager.Provides training on non-technical topics to internal and external entities.Audits of case assignments in the Information Management Systems (LIMS and MEIMS).Develops policies and procedures on casework management for the ACOME.Occasionally provides reliable courier and messenger services for the department, as needed.

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.Establish effective working relationships with managers, co-workers, law enforcement agencies, the District Attorney’s Office, the Public Defender’s Office, and private attorneys.Lift fifty (50) pounds.Learn and utilize applicable computer systems, databases, and applications.Work effectively and efficiently under adverse conditions including, but not limited to, scenes involving extremes of temperature and weather conditions, highly stressful environments, criminal activity, and areas where there exist distasteful sights, odors, or other circumstances and hazards inherent to death scene investigation.Work effectively with highly emotional people and personnel and in stressful situations.Maintain a strict chain of custody in accordance with established protocol.Follow standard operation procedures for confidentiality and communication. Residency: Allegheny County within 1 year.
