*University of Maryland School of Medicine* *Chair, Department of Anesthesiology* ** *Baltimore, Maryland*- University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) seeks an accomplished and strategic physician executive to serve as its next Chair, Department of Anesthesiology.

This Chair will be an exceptional academic leader with a substantial record of clinical, research, teaching, and administrative achievements to lead the Department into the future.

The new Chair will hold the Martin Helrich Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology named endowment.

This is an outstanding position for a contemporary and inspirational leader well-versed in the academic mission to serve at one of the nation's top anesthesiology departments and to collaborate across campus to train the next generation of physicians, scientists, and health professionals, providing compassionate clinical care, and conducting advanced biomedical research to solve the generational health challenges of our time.

UMSOM was established in 1807 and is one of the oldest public medical schools in the country.

UMSOM is known for synergy among the clinical and basic sciences departments and for pioneering new treatments in many areas of strength, which include transplant science, infectious disease, cancer care at the University of Maryland Marlene & Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, and shock trauma at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, the nation's first and only integrated trauma hospital, where groundbreaking research and innovative medical procedures save thousands of lives every year.

UMSOM is currently among the top public medical schools in the country, with an impressive $530 million in extramural research funding.

This funding ranks UMSOM #9 among all public medical schools and #32 among all medical schools for research grants and contract expenditures.

The UMSOM Department of Anesthesiology is also a national leader in its research efforts.

The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research ranked the department #14 among NIH-funded anesthesiology departments in the United States, with over $6 million in annual NIH funding.

The department comprises 110 faculty members, organized across twelve clinical divisions and one organized research center offering state-of-the-art subspecialized clinical care, outstanding clinical research projects, a four-year residency program with 58 residents, six subspecialty fellowship programs with 7 active fellows and 58 practice employed certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs).

UMSOM seeks a visionary leader who fosters an academic environment as well as clinical excellence and effectiveness to serve as Department Chair.

Along with the Dean, this leader will develop and execute a strategic plan to lead the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered clinical programs, robust growth of research, and advancement of educational programs, and service missions.As the University of Maryland Medical System’s (UMMS) go-to leader for anesthesia services and the University of Maryland Medical Center’s (UMMC) Chief of Anesthesiology, the Chair will champion patient safety/quality/practice advancement, advancement of cost-effective anesthesia care strategies and strengthening the clinical workforce while guiding the department in alignment with the health system's geographic growth strategy.

The next Chair will be responsible for continuing to enhance multidisciplinary clinical and research collaborations across UMMS and UMSOM-UMMC campuses.

The ideal candidate will possess prior successful administrative and leadership experience gained within an anesthesiology department in an academic center.

The successful candidate will also have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to recruit, promote the growth of others, inspire, manage, and collaborate.

Candidates must hold a medical doctorate degree, be fellowship-trained, and possess certification from the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Qualified candidates would be expected to be eligible for the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at UMSOM.

The salary range for this position is $650,000-$800,000.

The referenced salary range reflects the AAMC base pay guidelines, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank.

This salary range does not include all components of the anesthesiology faculty compensation program or pay from participation in the anesthesiology incentive compensation programs.

Therefore, the actual compensation paid to the selected candidate may vary from the salary range stated herein.
