Colonial Pipeline is the largest refined products pipeline in the United States, transporting more than 100 million gallons or 2.5 million barrels per day.

Colonial transports various grades of gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil, jet fuel, and fuels for the U.S. military through a pipeline system.

Colonial transports approximately 45 percent of all fuel consumed on the East Coast, providing refined products to more than 50 million Americans.

What is a Controls Engineer?

Controls Engineers design, test, implement, and troubleshoot control systems including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs), and low-voltage electrical circuits.

These systems monitor inputs like pressure, temperature, flow rates, and equipment status, enabling automated responses or alerts to ensure safe and efficient pipeline operations.

Controls Engineers collaborate across departments—Operations, Engineering, Safety, Compliance, Cybersecurity, and more—to improve system reliability, safety, and performance.

What a Controls Engineering Co-Op might learn and do:

  • Understand pipeline systems, layout, and operations.

  • Shadow experienced engineers and participated in real-world problem-solving.
