Job description

The USA TODAY NETWORK is seeking a College Sports Editor to lead strategy and achieve the company's mission of becoming the dominant college sports news and information source in the country.



We're looking for a visionary who can leverage the strength of dozens of college sports markets, including USA TODAY, to create repeatable audience and revenue growth within the nation's largest news organization.



This is a big job that demands commitment to excellence through accountability.

The ability to create clarity through leadership is required to steer our talented teams of college writers to unrealized heights.



The candidate will innovate at the speed of news, working closely with direct supervisors to evolve strategies founded in relentless relevance and champion-level journalism.

Helping envision experiences that drive consistent incremental revenue growth and reader retention is also part of the role.



The role will directly oversee college coverage at USA TODAY, including everything from quick-hitting news to deeply reported enterprise, commentary, analysis and anticipatory journalism.

The candidate also will work with sports editors across the enterprise, including local properties, to strategically grow college audience and revenue at scale.



The candidate who fills this role will be an engine for ideation who can mobilize journalists to maximize results and be a steadying presence who leads with precision in a volatile college landscape.



This is a salaried role, reporting directly to the Executive Editor of Sports for Gannett.

Remote candidates in all states except Alaska & Hawaii are welcome to apply.



Responsibilities:

  • Create culture of growth in college coverage via clear expectations, strategic clarity and unwavering accountability.

  • Iterate strategies page view, subscription and engagement growth.

  • Work with network partners to create lanes for incremental revenue growth, including affiliate partnerships, sales partnerships, new experiences, books and reprints.

  • Educate college sports leaders and writers on tactics for content, engagement and revenue strategy execution and ensure all KPIs are always met.

  • Inspire a culture of competitiveness in pursuit of breaking news, exclusive information and exceptional journalism.

  • Create a cycle of short-, mid- and long-term plans for growth, including the next big thing based on advancements in technology and media.

  • Evangelize responsible use cases of A.I. tools, including ethical principles.

  • Collaborate with network leaders to achieve company goals beyond sports.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 5+ years experience as a respected sports journalism leader, with focus on digital content and multimedia platforms.

  • Experience in high-level decision-making with complex, impactful or sensitive news content.

  • Advanced understanding of various news and information content management systems.

  • A history of successful leadership, collaboration, innovation and goal achievement.

  • Demonstrated change leader who collaborates and communicates effectively with diverse personalities.

  • Demonstrated record of goal achievement.

  • Proven history of guiding strong watchdog, enterprise and features work across multiple platforms.

  • Strong competitive instincts and intellectual curiosity.

  • Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct.

    The annualized base salary for this role will range between $73,000 and $114,063.
