Position Details




General Statement
Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions.

Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding.

Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years.

After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration.

The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials.

Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool.

Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program.

Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.

We seek individuals who work professionally and effectively with diverse individuals, possess effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and have the ability to contribute positively to the academic success of the students and the mission of Montana State University.


Duties and Responsibilities
Typically, instructors teach WRIT 101: College Writing I, WRIT 201: College Writing II


Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

+ A master’s degree in English or closely-related field.

+ Successful experience teaching college composition

+ Demonstrated experience working with and engaging diverse students and colleagues within and outside the department



Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

+ Degree focus in rhetoric, professional writing, and/or writing pedagogy.

+ Commitment to supporting, promoting, and building an inclusive and culturally diverse campus environment.



The Successful Candidate Will

+ Demonstrate a commitment to teaching toward program-wide student learning outcomes applicable to the courses they are assigned to teach.

+ Possess a willingness to participate in faculty development activities in support of best-practice based instruction.

+ Maintain confidentiality of records and information.

+ Possess the ability teach in a diverse university community and have potential to help students from diverse backgrounds succeed.

+ Non-Tenure Track Faculty – Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University ( AFMSU ).

Faculty covered by AFMSU may choose to pay membership dues.

This is a condition of employment.

The Program

The Department
The English curriculum at Montana State University is a rich and challenging program taught by faculty who are highly qualified as scholars and teachers of literature, writing, and language, as well as winners of many awards for teaching excellence and scholarly achievement.

Students in English are expected to become skilled readers and writers through the study of language and literature.

The program encourages students in the pleasures of rigorous, thoughtful reading, writing, and thinking.

Students will gain knowledge of literature from various cultures and eras, especially British and American literature, both canonical and emergent; demonstrate an understanding of critical approaches to the study of literature; and become aware of the relationship between culture and literary studies.

Students in the teaching option in addition will learn about methods of teaching English and give promise of excellence in secondary teaching.

As a strong pre-professional major, English prepares students for entry into a number of graduate fields, including English, law, and library science, as well as for careers in teaching, journalism, public relations, management, and technical or professional writing.
