Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer: Gas Turbines

Location: Indianapolis, IN

Industry: Defense

 

Job Description:

The Mechanical Design Engineer will contribute to the development, optimization, and validation of high-performance gas turbine gear systems and related rotating components.

This role involves creating and refining mechanical designs, performing detailed engineering analyses, and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams to ensure performance, safety, and manufacturability standards are met.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with gas turbine or aerospace component design and a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles.

 

Responsibilities:


  • Develop and deliver new component designs and design changes for gas turbine gears, shafts, bearings, and seals.

  • Create and refine design concepts, 3D models, and detailed drawings for production release.

  • Perform strength, fatigue, and durability analyses to ensure reliability and performance compliance.

  • Conduct tolerance stack-ups, GD&T, and tolerance analyses to ensure manufacturability and assembly precision.

  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and aftermarket teams to address production issues, evaluate supplier documentation, and support change proposals.

  • Investigate prototype and in-service hardware issues through root cause and corrective action (RCCA) analysis.

  • Implement design improvements based on performance data, test results, and field feedback.

  • Present and defend design concepts to program leadership and collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable aerospace design standards, product integrity requirements, and safety protocols.


Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field (Master’s or PhD may substitute for experience).

  • Minimum of 5 years of mechanical/component design experience, ideally in gear systems, rotating equipment, or aerospace applications.

  • Proven experience with gas turbine design and development (competitor or industry experience preferred).

  • Proficiency with GD&T, tolerance analysis, and mechanical design best practices.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills.
