SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not.
Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
COMPUTATIONAL OPTICS ENGINEER, SPACE LASERS (STARLINK)
The Starlink Space Lasers team develops, produces, and deploys the most cutting-edge satellite free-space optical communication systems in the world.
We are looking for engineers to contribute to the development of optical products and applications for the groundbreaking constellation of Starlink satellites.
In this role, you will focus on defining and designing novel algorithms and methodologies to enhance our space-based imaging systems.
Your work will directly contribute to mission-critical applications, including next-generation star tracking for precise navigation and optical metrology for high-accuracy measurements in space environments.
This position requires a blend of theoretical expertise, practical implementation skills, and a passion for solving complex problems in real-time, resource-constrained systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Design, develop, and optimize image processing algorithms across all optical products
+ Define requirements for imaging systems with a range of applications
+ Innovate imaging products by creating advanced processing pipelines for satellite imagery, such as noise reduction, feature extraction, and data compression in low-bandwidth scenarios.
+ Advance next-generation star tracking systems through the development of robust computer vision algorithms for star detection, pattern recognition, and attitude determination under challenging conditions (e.g., high-speed maneuvers, radiation interference).
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams (e.g., software, hardware, and mission operations) to integrate image processing solutions into flight software and hardware prototypes.
+ Conduct simulations, testing, and validation of algorithms using real and synthetic datasets from space missions.
+ Analyze performance metrics and iterate on techniques to improve accuracy, speed, and reliability in edge cases like low-light environments or on-orbit dynamics.
+ Advance optical metrology techniques through image processing, including developing new approaches for precise dimensional analysis, surface inspection, and 3D reconstruction from optical data.
+ Review on-orbit data of existing systems, and define and develop improvements to maintain current hardware
+ Assess system reliability and participate in risk discussions with internal reliability teams, management, customers, and vendors
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Bachelor’s degree in physics, computer science, electrical engineering, or other engineering/STEM discipline
+ 2+ years of hands-on experience in image processing or computer vision
+ 2+ years of experience in a computer programming language (e.g. C++, Python, and/or MATLAB)
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
+ Master's degree or PhD in physics or an engineering or STEM discipline
+ Experience with optical systems, sensors (e.g., CCD/CMOS cameras), and data processing in real-time applications
+ Familiarity with machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) for vision-based tasks
+ Experience in aerospace or space-related applications, such as satellite imaging or navigation systems
+ Expertise in optical metrology tools and techniques, including interferometry, photogrammetry, or laser-based measurements
+ Hands-on experience in optical design or system design, integration, and test of laser
communication systems
+ Hands-on experience with embedded systems, FPGA programming, or GPU acceleration for image processing
+ Experience taking algorithms from proof-of-concept designs to optimized and robust C++ implementations suitable for autonomous systems
+ Knowledge of and experience in lasers, photodiodes, fiber optics, optics
testing/troubleshooting techniques, and signal integrity principles
+ Knowledge of and experience in free-space optical principles, optical component
testing/troubleshooting techniques, precision metrology techniques, manufacturing and
integration processes
+ Experience with hardware development for high-reliability applications
+ Ability to assess risk and make design and development decisions without all available
data
+ Ability to work in a fast paced, autonomously driven, and demanding atmosphere
+ Competence with optical test equipment (power meters, interferometer, laser sources)
+ Experience with infrared system alignment and characterization
+ Competence with Python scripting and a Linux operating system environment
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills
