Vacancy Announcement: Consultant

Consultancy Title: UX/UI Product Designer

Section/Division/Duty Station: Division of Communication and Advocacy (GCA), Digital Strategy Section – NYHQ

Background / Purpose

Purpose Of Activity/Assignment: The Product Designer will enable UNICEF’s Digital Governance and Platforms Team to offer clear and engaging web products by crafting, testing, and enhancing the features available on our web platform.

Scope Of Work

The Product Designer will tackle design specific tasks assigned and estimated during regular sprint planning sessions, in coordination with the Product Owner and Design Lead, using our Agile Project Management Methodology.

This consultancy will create and support the integration of an A/B testing framework into UNICEF’s UX/UI design process.

This work will contribute to the development of intuitive and accessible interfaces and features for UNICEF’s Drupal platform, as well as enhancing the UNICEF.org Design System, which is an enterprise-level, variable and component based Figma library.

The expected results will include participation in Sprint Planning and Sprint Demo sessions, along with full demonstration of the design task, and proper handover in Figma with notations for Product, Design, and Development teams, as noted above.

This scope of work is projected as Phase I of what is anticipated to be a broader assignment that may involve additional phases and deliverables for a possible extended period.

The Product Designer can be remote based, but will work with a team situated in Valencia, Spain.

An overlap in working hours is required for this role.

Terms of Reference / Deliverables

Work Assignment Overview: The Product Designer will work within 18 Design Sprints to deliver design concepts, functional prototypes, and final design specifications for User Interface (UI) elements within the UNICEF Design System.

All work will be created in Figma and integrated into the Drupal enterprise system.

Duties per Sprint:

Sprint Planning:

  • Attend one Sprint Planning session every three weeks.
  • Work with the Product Owner and Design Lead to identify, refine, and estimate design tasks.
  • Commit to working on an average of 8 user stories per sprint, with each story requiring approximately 7 hours to complete.

A/B Testing:

  • Develop A/B testing approach that integrates with ongoing UX research and UI design work.
  • Plan and execute testing of design concepts to improve engagement and conversions.
  • Share key insights and recommendations to encourage adoption of A/B testing practices.

Design And Prototyping:

  • Develop and prepare design concepts and prototypes for A/B testing and use the results to optimize final design.
  • Ensure all designs adhere to accessibility standards and align with the organization’s branding.
  • Attend Sprint Demo sessions to present completed or in-progress work, including specifications and documentation for review and approval.

UNICEF Design System:

  • Implement Design System roadmap recommendations and updates
  • Update Design System components and library based on A/B testing outcomes

Deliverables / Outputs

Sprint 1 — 18: User Stories Completed:

  • An average of 8 user stories per sprint completed with detailed design files in Figma.

Sprint Demos:

  • Participation in one Sprint Demo session per sprint to demonstrate completed or in-progress tasks.

A/B Testing:

  • Concise A/B testing framework developed outlining how to integrate this methodology into ongoing UX research and design work.
  • Testing of design concepts, including A/B and multivariate tests, planned and executed.
  • Results tracked, analyzed and documented.
  • Results translated into actionable design recommendations.
  • A practical guide (5–8 pages) on incorporating A/B testing in UNICEF’s design and content processes completed.
  • One or two internal capacity-building sessions on using A/B testing for design and content optimization.

Design And Prototyping:

  • High-fidelity design concepts and functional prototypes for new or enhanced UI elements completed.
  • Finalized and updated design specifications within the UNICEF Design System, ensuring the master file remains accurate and consistent.
  • Clear documentation provided for deliverables and design handovers to Product, Design and Development teams.
  • Annotated Figma files, including interaction details, provided to guide implementation by developers.

UNICEF Design System:

  • Key aspects of the Design System enhanced and restructured Styles and component library updated, or new ones created as needed
  • Standardized variable and component naming for clarity and consistency

Qualifications

  • Education
  • A professional and educational background or related to design (web, UX/UI, product, user experience, graphic) including:
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Design (web, UX/UI, product, user experience, graphic) or related fields.
  • An unrelated Bachelor’s Degree with an additional two years of relevant work experience as outlined below, may also be considered with sufficient demonstrable professional experience in UX/UI fields.
  • Knowledge/Expertise/Skills required:
  • 5 years or more of relevant professional experience in design (web, UX/UI, product, user experience, graphic).
  • A strong digital portfolio demonstrating user experience and user interface design.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Proven record of creating intuitive and accessible interfaces and features for large web platforms.

The ability to use and work with product design tools,

Including: Requirements: Completed profile in UNICEF’s e-Recruitment system and

  • Upload copy of academic credentials
  • Financial proposal that will include/ reflect :
  • the costs per each deliverable and the total lump-sum for the whole assignment (in US$) to undertake the terms of reference.
  • travel costs and daily subsistence allowance, if internationally recruited or travel is required as per TOR.
  • Any other estimated costs: visa, health insurance, and living costs as applicable.
  • Indicate your availability
  • Any emergent / unforeseen duty travel and related expenses will be covered by UNICEF.
  • At the time the contract is awarded, the selected candidate must have in place current health insurance coverage.
  • Payment of professional fees will be based on submission of agreed satisfactory deliverables.
