Job description

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (https://engineering.nyu.edu/academics/departments/mechanical-and-aerospace-engineering) at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering invites applications among the robotics community for two full-time, teaching-oriented, non-tenured, continuing contract faculty positions in Mechanical Engineering , at the rank of Industry Assistant Professor, with a start date as early as January 1, 2025.

The primary responsibilities of the positions are classroom and laboratory teaching and project/thesis mentoring in Robotics and Embodied Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The successful candidate should be an excellent teacher and have research experience in robotics and embodied AI fields.

The candidate must be able to mentor projects/theses in support of our MS program in Robotics and undergraduate courses in our Robotics minor.



Candidates should have a Ph.D. degree in engineering or science closely related to Robotics, such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, aerospace engineering, industrial engineering, civil engineering, or a related discipline.

Candidates must demonstrate a solid understanding of the basics of one or multiple fundamental areas in robotics (perception & sensing, planning & control, learning, and design).

Strong hands-on experience in robotics theories and software tools is a plus.

Candidates must demonstrate clear potential for scholarship, leadership, and curricular innovation.

All candidates must demonstrate or show potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring.



Requirement

The expectations for the Industry Assistant Professor primarily involve teaching robotics courses per semester.

This position is not required to conduct research, although if the candidate wishes to, the teaching assignment can be arranged to allow the candidate to engage in funded research, and the candidate is welcome to leverage the Robotics and AI research networks and resources within the department, the school, and the whole university.

The initial appointment may take 2-3 years, and the position is renewable afterward.

Ideal candidates for the role could include postdocs and research fellows who are actively involved in robotic research in either academia or industry R&D labs.

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at NYU Tandon educates future engineers who develop the physical systems and devices that modern society demands, from automobiles to air conditioning, prosthetic limbs to autonomous machines, and rocket engines to satellites.

Our faculty is breaking new ground in controls and robotic systems, computer-integrated mechanical and electromechanical systems, the modeling and simulation of complex systems, and fluid and thermal systems, among other areas.

Recent research has led to breakthroughs in fast trajectory planning for legged robots and robot manipulators; accurate full-body proprioception for soft robotics; robust robot localization and navigation in urban environments; robots that aid in the education of children with autism; lightweight new protective materials with applications in national defense, sports medicine, and transportation; technological methods of leading wildlife away from danger areas; aspects of complex urban systems that impact how people live and work in dense urban environments, etc.

Additional Information



In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual (9 month) base salary range for this position is $85,000-$125,000 for the Industry Assistant Professor rank .
