Job Summary
The Control Systems Technician with Combustion focus plays a critical role in the installation, commissioning,
maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial combustion and control systems.

This position combines

instrumentation, controls, electrical, and mechanical expertise to support the safe and efficient operation of furnaces,
dryers, and other combustion-based process equipment.
The ideal candidate has a solid understanding of burner and blower systems, electrical and control fundamentals,
PLC/HMI troubleshooting, and process instrumentation.

This role is field-based and requires hands-on involvement in

complex commissioning environments.


Key Responsibilities


Combustion & Burner Systems
• Install, commission, and service industrial combustion systems including burners, blowers, valve trains,
dampers, and safety devices.
• Assist in burner tuning, air/gas ratio adjustment, and optimization of combustion performance.
• Perform safety interlock verification and purge sequence validation per NFPA 86 and site-specific standards.
• Conduct pressure and flow checks for combustion air and fuel systems, ensuring proper regulation and
operation.
• Support commissioning of multi-burner systems, including regenerative and cold-fired configurations.
Instrumentation & Control Systems
• Install, calibrate, and troubleshoot process instruments such as thermocouples, pressure transmitters,
switches, and control valves associated with combustion and temperature control.
• Verify signal integrity, perform loop checks, and assist with control loop commissioning.
• Interpret and work from P&IDs, loop sheets, and instrument data sheets to support accurate field
implementation.
• Support implementation of control strategies consistent with ISA instrumentation and control standards.


Electrical Systems
• Read and interpret electrical schematics, panel layouts, and control wiring diagrams.
• Perform terminations, continuity checks, and troubleshooting of 24 VDC, 120 VAC, and 480 VAC circuits.
• Support installation and modification of control panels, MCC terminations, and burner management system
wiring.


PLC / HMI Troubleshooting
• Utilize PLC software and HMI diagnostics to troubleshoot combustion control sequences and interlocks.
• Understand basic ladder logic and tag structures to assist engineers in resolving issues.
• Monitor burner control permissives, sequencing, and analog control functions through the control system.
• Work with engineers to identify control logic discrepancies and assist with corrective programming efforts
during commissioning.


Documentation & Communication
• Complete detailed service reports, loop check records, burner tuning sheets, and redline markups.
• Communicate clearly with engineering, service management, and customer personnel on technical
findings.
• Maintain accurate records of system changes, instrument calibrations, and commissioning activities.


Skills & Qualifications
• Familiarity with electrical and process documentation such as P&IDs, PFDs, and wiring schematics.
• Hands-on experience with NFPA 86-compliant combustion systems.
• Experience with combustion systems, hydraulic/pneumatic control, and temperature regulation.
• Calibration experience with temperature, pressure, and flow devices used in combustion control.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work collaboratively across departments.
• Willingness to travel to customer sites as needed for commissioning and support.
Education & Experience:
• High school diploma or GED required; technical school or associate degree in Instrumentation, Electrical
Technology, or similar preferred.
• Minimum 2 years of industrial controls, combustion, or instrumentation experience.
• ISA Certified Control Systems Technician (CCST) Level I or II, or working toward certification preferred.
