BWXT’s Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers.

Position Overview:

  • As a Core Design Thermal-Hydraulic Engineering Intern you will work with experienced engineers and designers to support the development of analytical models for the performance analysis of the nuclear reactor.
  • Location:

  • The position will be located in Lynchburg, VA at the Advanced Technologies Office.
  • Your Day to Day as a Core Design Thermal-Hydraulic Engineering Intern:

  • Collaborate with engineers and designers to develop analytical models for nuclear reactor thermal-hydraulic performance analysis and assess their operating characteristics using state-of-the-art analysis software.

  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team to make design tradeoffs and decisions relating to thermal-hydraulic performance of a terrestrial or space based nuclear reactor system.

  • Required Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently enrolled student, pursuing a degree in engineering or physics.


  • Must have a strong interest in thermal-hydraulic engineering.

  • Must have completed introductory engineering classes, including thermodynamics/heat transfer, fluid mechanics, or those same topics covered in nuclear engineering courses.

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with thermal-hydraulic analysis tools (MOOSE, Ansys or other) is a plus.

  •  Pay: $21.50 - $29.50

    The starting hourly rate for this position in Virginia (US-VA) at the start of employment is expected to be between $21.50 and $29.50 per hour.

    The hourly rate offered is based on local job market factors and other objective business considerations.

    Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits.

    Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment.

    If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at-will,’ unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
