General Description

The Baruch Science Technology Entry Program (STEP) Academy, funded by the New York State Department of Education (NYSED), provides STEM enrichment and college access programming for 200 secondary school students annually.

The STEP Academy operates on Saturdays during the academic year and for four weeks in the summer.

The grant funding is used to implement a comprehensive student-centered program that promotes academic success for economically disadvantaged students to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) degrees.


The Baruch Collegiate Science Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) is a newly awarded program with the mission to provide 37 undergraduate students with access to research and internship opportunities for practical experience in their career fields, support with their professional development to identify career interests and goals, wraparound support services to increase student retention and degree completion while achieving their academic goals and the attainment of postgraduate or employment opportunities.


Position Description


Organizational Structure 


Reporting to the Director of STEP and CSTEP programs, the C/STEP Manager will split their time between the two programs providing support services to secondary school students and a small cohort of Baruch undergraduates.

The office of STEP and CSTEP programs is a collaborative team that consists of the director, STEP assistant director, C/STEP manager (new role), office assistant, STEP Saturday staff (coordinator, assistants, and counselors), and interns.

The office reports to the Dean of Weissman School of Arts and Sciences.

As an experienced college access advocate and innovative thinker, this highly motivated individual will possess the ability to confidently collaborate with campus department heads and external partners, while utilizing strong problem-solving and dynamic interpersonal skills to provide participants with high-level programming and support.

Other Duties

This role will assist in the supervision of the daily operations of CSTEP by working with academic departments to provide research opportunities and campus offices to support participants with academic tutoring, career counseling, and service-learning opportunities.

For STEP, this role will be crucial in assisting the director with planning the calendar of events for Saturday programming focusing on college readiness, career exploration, and soft skill development.

While the responsibilities below are comprehensive, additional duties may be performed for the success of both programs.


Both Programs

  • Assist with the compilation and submission of the mid-year and final reports outlining adherence to program requirements and participation records.

  • Attend and facilitate events to represent the program to prospective students and internal and external stakeholders.


  • Serve on search committees to fill open positions for faculty and staff.

  • Attend C/STEP regional and statewide meetings, conferences, and professional development workshops.

  • Provide and coordinate workshops for grade/age-appropriate soft skill development.
  • CSTEP 

  • Coordinate all aspects of student entry into the program from point-of-interest, application, acceptance, orientation, enrollment, and participation record.


  • Provide academic and career counseling, including the facilitation of placement opportunities for internships, research, or experiential/service learning.


  • Plan, promote, and implement programming throughout the summer and academic year.

  • Build a collaborative community of support and sense of belonging among participants.

  • Identify potential research placement sites and building relationships to increase student opportunities

  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders to ensure successful student recruitment and program development (e.g., Starr Career Development Center, Office of Experiential Learning & Community Engagement)
  • STEP 

  • Coordinate with postsecondary counselors for Saturday programming.

  • Design curriculum and facilitate workshops for grade specific development skills and preparation for college readiness, social emotional learning, and leadership skills.

  • Plan special events with campus and external partners(moderate panels and collaborate with guest presenters).

  • Provide juniors and seniors with one-on-one counseling sessions designed to build confidence and provide self-advocacy tools to plan for successful college transitions.
  • Qualifications

    Required 

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Minimum of 3-5 years' experience working in college support programs, career development, or academic program management

  • Must be available to work Saturdays during the academic year (with Mondays off) and the occasional evening event.

  • Significant experience working with economically disadvantaged secondary school students and/or undergraduates.

  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating workshops on financial aid, academic support, career development and/or research opportunities.

  • Strong organizational and event planning skills.

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Preferred

  • Master’s degree in related area.

  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating and implementing support programming for students in academic or career counseling with an emphasis on STEM research or internships.
