Title: Data Engineer II
Duration: months (Possible etension)
Location: West Point, PA (Onsite – days per week)
Client: Pharmaceutical
Position Summary
The Data Engineer will work within the Digital Sciences team to design, develop, and maintain data workflows and pipelines that enable more effective identification, characterization, and development of Client medicines and vaccines.
The role collaborates with scientists, IT teams, and digital champions to translate experimental data into automated and reproducible electronic workflows.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain data workflows and pipelines using Python (
Develop ETL processes, data wrangling, ingestion, and workflow automation
Collaborate with scientists and SMEs to gather requirements and understand experimental data
Build tools to automate data capture and analysis from electronic lab notebooks
Manage project timelines, estimations, and deliverables
Work with IT to implement solutions in cloud environments (AWS)
Participate in daily standups and provide updates to collaborators
Ensure quality, reproducibility, and documentation of code and workflows
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, related field, or Chemistry/Science degree with strong programming experience
– years of relevant experience in data engineering or scientific data automation
Strong Python skills with experience in packages: Boto, Pandas, pyodbc, openpyxl
Experience with Python virtual environments (conda) and IDEs (VS Code or PyCharm)
Cloud services experience: AWS (Lambda, S, CloudFormation, RDS, ECR)
Development of ETL processes, data workflows, pipelines, and data wrangling
Version control with Git/GitHub, CI/CD with GitHub Actions
SQL and relational database experience; data modeling and design
Experience working with file formats: XLSX, YAML, JSON, CSV, TSV
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with scientists and IT teams
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with additional AWS services: SQS, DLQ, SNS, EventBridge, API Gateway
Python packages: Cerberus, PyYAML, logging; familiarity with linters, type hints, regular expressions
Experience with data pipeline tools such as Dataiku or Trifacta
Prior IT experience in pharmaceutical or life sciences research environments
Analytical and genomics data experience
