Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Scholarly Communication & Collections Services, The Data Services Librarian designs and provides services to scholars in the support of research data management.

The position will provide support and instruction in data management tools and techniques required by faculty, researchers, and students in line with FAIR Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship: .

The Data Services Librarian offers workshops and consultation services in the Anderson Academic Commons’ Research Center, partners with the Scholarly Communications Librarian, the Digital Initiatives Librarian, and liaison librarians as appropriate.

They will also work with campus partners in IT@DU, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, and the University of Denver’s Research Data, Services and Ethics Committee.

The librarian actively engages in scholarly activities through research and publication and participates in professional organizations, as well as library and campus committees.

Appointment will be made at the rank of Assistant Professor, non-tenure track.

Essential Functions

  • Support researchers in data management planning aligned with relevant requirements, particularly federal, state, and funder policies.
  • Advise campus partners in research data management best-practices and policy matters including working closely with the University’s Research Data, Services and Ethics Committee to ensure that University Libraries data management practices are in line with university policies.
  • Support researchers in navigating common funding agency requirements, such as the National Science Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, or National Institutes of Health.
  • Design and deliver workshops on research data management to researchers across multiple disciplines.
  • Provide research data consultation services through the Anderson Academic Commons’ Research Center.
  • Lead user application support efforts for REDCap, a secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases.
  • Provide expert guidance in tools related to research data management, including DMPTool and software or programming languages for statistical analysis/data cleanup.
  • Supervise 1-3 hourly student assistants with responsibilities for supporting data services.
  • Work with liaison librarians and directly with researchers to develop understanding of disciplinary needs in research data management.
  • Work in accordance with the promotion guidelines and engage in scholarly activities through research and publication, as a library faculty member.
  • Participate and engage in service commitments with local, regional, and national professional organizations.

  • Supervision of hourly graduate students.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of legal and policy requirements related to research data management.
  • Ability to articulate the role of libraries in research data services.
  • Understanding and awareness of the data repository landscape including disciplinary and institutional repositories.
  • Ability to build relationships with university partners in research data management efforts, such as the Office of Research and Sponsored Projects and IT@DU.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to reach out to and engage target audiences, effectively communicate in all formats, and adapt communication style to suit different audiences.
  • Ability to use knowledge, experience, awareness, and skills to advance the Libraries’ commitment to diversity and inclusion and effectively engage with a broad spectrum of culturally diverse groups and communities.
  • Ability to organize work and set priorities for yourself and provide leadership for those you supervise.
  • Ability to actively engage in the library organization, including leadership and participation in teams, task forces, and committees, working professionally in support of colleagues, and sharing responsibility as a faculty member in the library’s mission, goals, programs, and plans.

Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited master's degree in Library and Information Science, or a graduate degree in data science, or other related field such as statistics, data analysis, etc.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data management practices including data curation and preservation principles.
  • A successful candidate will demonstrate knowledge, ability, or potential to engage effectively with culturally diverse communities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate, concentration, or advanced coursework in research data management.
  • Experience working in an academic or research library.
  • Experience supporting researchers, scholars, and/or colleagues through consultation or instruction in data management or other research data services.
  • Working knowledge of software, programming languages, and/or other technology often used in collecting, curating, or analyzing research data such as: DMPTool, OpenRefine, SPSS, Git, R, Python, REDCap, or Excel.
  • Familiarity with or experience navigating common research data licenses (CC, ODC, public domain, etc.) in the sharing of research data.
  • Experience with common metadata standards, schemas, and formats for data (for example: Dublin Core, XML, JSON, and CSV).
  • Experience supervising, leading, training, or mentoring staff or students.
  • Demonstrated experience or potential to contribute to the profession through research, publication, and service to national and regional professional organizations.

Work Schedule

Flexible, but generally, M-F 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

While the University's administrative offices are open Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, faculty schedules vary from term to term and are based on courses taught, service commitments, and research agendas.

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $65,000 - $70,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting.

The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range.

The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
