Die Cutter Operator - Winston-Salem Manufacturing

Shift: 2nd Shift

Summary:

The Die Cutter Operator hourly position is responsible for providing specialized technical support to machine centers and crews.

The Die Cutter Operator will be tasked with carrying out, communicating, and helping maintain management’s desired technical machine efficiencies and quality standards and also for working with all hourly Manufacturing personnel to achieve those standards.

Operator will act as quasi-subject matter experts in their fields and help with training, troubleshooting and identifying constraints on those equipment centers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Leads machine centers and crews in safety, quality and production efforts during the shift.
  • Responsible for the set-up, direction and operation of the line and equipment on assigned machines in the department
  • Trains employees on safe and efficient operating techniques and best practices.

    Assist in troubleshooting and setups.
  • Use technical knowledge and skills to assist establishing run speeds for jobs on the machines in their field.
  • Inspects and applies control methods and other techniques to ensure quality.
  • Use technical knowledge and skills to assist machine crews with adherence to quality procedures.
  • Use technical knowledge and skills to assist machine centers in their departments run efficiently and safely.
  • Identify technical and quality constraints and actively participate with teams looking to remove those constraints identified.

  • Adjust machines, if needed, with corrective measures for machine efficiency and quality.
  • Understand and utilize production run equations including cycle time, flow time and pace calculations
  • Assist with training new employees on workplace safety and WestRock’s policies concerning safety.
  • Keep Supervisors informed about production scheduling based on machine performance.

  • Liaison with other departments such as quality assurance, warehouse, maintenance, and project coordination to ensure ongoing team effort and problem resolution.
  • Corrects problems involving incomplete information and/or data.
  • Possess a working knowledge of AS400 and Kiwi be able to monitor production orders in the plant.

  • Monitor overall safety and cleanliness of the equipment in their area and encourage fellow hourly employees to participate in daily safety and cleanliness measures.
  • Work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Overtime is required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities:

    This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

    This is an hourly non-management position.

    The position does provide leadership opportunities working with the hourly manufacturing employees and machine centers.

    Indicators are troubleshooting skills, technical competence, application of training, thoroughness and efficiency in solving problems, and making progress improvements.

    Indicators include the quantity and quality of work, the absence of rework and waste, utilization of resources, safe work behaviors, preplanning, and anticipating problems.

    Manufacturing employees will also be evaluated based on the following: Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) considers the various sub-components of the manufacturing process.

    Availability, viewed as a snapshot of the current production efficiency for a machine, line or cell.

    OEE = (A)vailabilty x (P)erformance x (Q)uality.

    Expressed another way: Related Machine Speed (P) x Crewed Hours (A)/ Good Sheets Out (Q).

    This section evaluates the employee’s performance to maximize the OEE on his/her machine.

    Attendance/Punctuality - Includes being present and ready for work as expected.

    Indicators are attendance records, number of times tardy, frequency of lateness returning from scheduled breaks or mealtimes, work readiness, and preparedness to begin work on time.

    (Three unexcused tardies equals one unexcused absence)

    Procedures/Documentation/Reporting - Refers to the importance of following procedures, carefully and thoroughly documenting critical activities, including training, and to the accurate reporting of information.

    Indicators include the following established procedures, documenting essential processes, preparing accurate, timely, legible, and complete reports.

    Communicating as needed with others in the organization.

    Coaching/Leading - Evaluates the employee’s ability and skill to positively influence others to achieve Company goals and expectations, regardless of one’s position or title.

    Indicators include effective planning and coordination of machine efficiencies and quality,, delegation and follow through, exhibiting and promoting confidence, supportive of company views and policies, self-directed initiative, acceptance of responsibility, effective use of time, materials, supplies, and personnel; patience, flexibility, adaptability, assists with training and desires to help others succeed, effective problem solving and decision-making skills.

    Education and/or Experience

    High school diploma or GED minimum.

    Language Skills

    Mathematical Skills

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

    Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Computer Skills

    To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of AS400 and basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel programs.

    Other Qualifications

  • Position requires 5 years industry related manufacturing experience.

  • Previous Die Cutter Experience required
  • Candidates are required to undergo a drug screening after receiving a conditional job offer, but before starting employment.
