Magazine_ and The Wall Street Journal’s Style News section are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Editorial Operations to lead and project-manage an award-winning editorial and creative team, helping ensure smooth operations across all platforms.



The ideal candidate has deep experience as a magazine managing editor or operations leader in an editorial setting.

They are a deft problem-solver, demonstrating robust understanding of digital and print content strategy and how to execute on time and on budget; of hiring, recruitment, culture-fostering and personnel management; of good financial hygiene and successful workflows; and of working closely with commercial, marketing, product and event teams to ensure all business needs are met.

They will thrive in a fast-paced but warm, collegial environment, and be ready to push The Journal’s strong Style team forward with energy and enthusiasm.

You will:



+ Oversee editorial operations and managerial administration of magazine & style publishing and personnel, ensuring all goals are met, projects are on track and commercial objectives are achieved.

+ Serve as proxy for WSJ.

Mag editor and translate editorial and commercial strategy into team priorities.

Communicate directives and feedback to larger team and serve as main authority for operations.

+ Manage and motivate a team of direct reports as well as the larger organization, both its editorial (reporters, editors, platforms) and creative (photo, fashion, design, social) sides.

+ Liaise with marketing, commercial, live-journalism teams, the larger Wall Street Journal’s managing editor office and Dow Jones corporate contacts on shared initiatives or goals.

+ Oversee all team involved in branded magazine or style extensions—including events, merchandise, special editions, pops-ups or speaking panels/presentations—and ensure success in all contexts.

Build and implement timelines and supervise execution.

+ Supervise and co-manage hiring processes with HR, MEO, Recruitment and section managers as they recruit, vet and hire candidates.

Participate in hiring screens and ensure all talent meets Wall Street Journal standards.

+ Direct staff onboarding, training, seating, team facility use, equipment needs, travel/credentialing requirements and adherence of all departments to office-related policies.

+ Lead regular budget meetings and take weekly pulse of spending with Deputy Managing Editor & Production Chief.

+ Help identify opportunities to thoughtfully evolve or refresh existing workflows or editorial production strategy, particularly around emerging platforms and franchises.

+ Act as a point of contract on product, workflow, or corporate-level initiatives as they pertain to WSJ.

Mag & Style, and communicate those to the team.

+ Supervise the planning of trainings and team events (an annual retreat, etc.) that ensure best practices on Journal strategy and audience goals are communicated and met.

+ Ensure the top-tier execution and ethical standards of _WSJ.

Magazine_ and the wider Wall Street Journal are consistently met: that work is of impeccable quality across all platforms, and that The Journal’s codes of conduct and overall Standards & Ethics rules are met.



You have:



+ 12 to 15 years of experience with proven effective leadership of large, creative editorial teams or senior roles in fast-paced news environments.

+ Strong skills as an influential and well-regarded manager, with a track record of motivating teams and fostering talent, as well as experience working collaboratively across departments to produce results.

+ Excellent time-management and prioritization skills, the ability to deploy people and resources to meet a variety of goals across different deadlines.

The organizational savvy to juggle daily deadlines while keeping long-term strategy in focus.

+ Comfort with financial management and balancing a budget against an editorial calendar.

+ Experience managing team finances and a comfort with balancing budgets against editorial calendars.

+ A collaborative attitude, strong communication skills and the ability to forge compromise and conjoin conflicting interests or competing timelines in a cross-functional organization.

+ A deep commitment to editorial excellence and holding high standards for ethical conduct.

Magazine editor-in-chief.

This position is based in our New York office.

Pay Range: $180,000 - $225,000
