Educational Sign Language Interpreter - Elementary

Position Summary: This is a support position directly responsible to the classroom teacher and, if appropriate, to support services professional (such as guidance counselor, physical therapist, occupational therapist, and/or speech therapist).

Average Hours per week: 35

Benefits for this position:

Single EIPA Certification Hourly Rate: $23.95

RID or Dual EIPA Certification Hourly Rate: $25.95

185 work days/year

10 Sick Days, 4 Personal/Emergency Days per year* (pro-rated for the remainder of 2025-2026 school year)

Full Medical-PPO, Dental, Prescription, and Vision Insurance Coverage for Employee and Dependents after 30 days ($35.00/ month premium+ deductible)

Required minimum 7.5% contribution to Pennsylvania School Employees Retirement System (PSERS).

Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Achieve and provide evidence of a score of 3.5 or higher on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) at the appropriate grade level

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Establish rapport with students and any members of the educational community that will need the educational interpreter's assistance
- Actively support the following roles that will be shared by the teacher of the hearing-impaired with the building classroom teachers:
1.Interpret class content information
2.Do not discipline students
3.Do not take responsibility for initially teaching content to hearing-impaired students
4.Become familiar with information prior to class presentation in order to establish an understanding of signs unique to the content being presented to the hearing-impaired student through ongoing communication with teachers
5.Review content of information with students after classroom presentation, as deemed necessary, to assure that information was properly received by student
6.Respect the hearing-impaired student's rights to privacy and maintain confidentiality
- Do not pass judgment on teacher instructional techniques and/or teaching style
- Communicate information with hearing-impaired students in relation to school functions, activities, classroom assignments, announcements, and conversations pertaining to the general nature of information that is pertinent to the student's inclusion in school and classroom activities
- Participate in curriculum activities where the interpreter is needed in order to effectively communicate the content of the activity to the hearing-impaired student (i.e. field trips and other activities outlined in approved curriculum documents)
- Participate in meetings during the school day where the interpreter is needed in order to effectively communicate the content of the activity to the hearing-impaired student (i.e. IEP, disciplinary, parent, guidance)
- Assist hearing-impaired student with obtaining missed info/assignments from classroom teacher upon return from student absence
- Provide input to teacher of the hearing-impaired in regards to suggesting ways to enhance the student's inclusion in school curriculum, classes, and activities
- Provide information to teacher of the hearing-impaired regarding how the student is functioning with the interpreter and address concerns related to student's communication needs for input in the IEP annual review
- Assist with the exiting or evacuation of identified hearing-impaired students in emergency or drill situations
- Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher or support professional and approved by the Program Supervisor
