    Job Description - Electrical and Instrumentation Technician

    Tucson Electric Power provides safe, reliable electric service to approximately 433,000 customers in Southern Arizona.

    **Candidates selected for testing will receive a confirmation email at the email address provided on the application as notification of the scheduled date and time of the testing session.

    Dates are subject to change based on business needs, weather and unforeseen circumstances.

    There will be a three-part testing procedure employed for this position.

    The first step is a written skills test followed by a practical skills test and an oral interview.

    Upon successful completion of the first exam, you will then move into the practical skills stage and then the interview.

    Each step of the process must be passed in order to progress to the next step.

    We are providing a study outline to prepare for the Technical Skills written test, practical test and the Behavioral Based Core Competency interview.

    By using this outline, and centralizing your study times in the areas listed below, you should be able to maximize your test results.

    Technical Skills Outline

    Basic knowledge of the following:

    ·Basic electrical and electronic terminology

    ·Basis electric and electronic components

    ·Electrical Diagrams and Symbols

    ·Electrical AC circuit fundamentals

    ·Electrical DC circuit fundamentals

    ·Basic mathematics and algebra

    ·I&C terminology, diagrams, and symbols

    ·General Safety procedures

    ·Specific Safety procedures a relating to I&C

    ·Application and use of I&C test equipment

    ·Application and use of piping and tubing material

    ·Valve and actuator operation and associated components

    ·Pressure measurements and associated equipment

    ·Temperature measurements and associated equipment

    ·Level measurements and associated equipment

    ·Flow measurements and associated equipment

    ·Simple microprocessor applications and logic

    ·Motor and motor control circuits

    ·Basic electrical theory

    ·Wiring protocols concepts of UPS Inverter systems

    ·Basic DCS controls – Ovation

    ·Basic PLC controls

    ·Basic logic circuits

    ·Electrical test equipment

    ·Electrical maintenance procedures including motors, switchgear and battery P.M.

    ·Mechanics of motor construction and repair

    ·Read electrical schematics and prints

    Practical Test Outline

    Skilled in the following tasks:

    ·Demonstrate ability to identify leads and connect wye wound motor for:

    ØHigh Voltage (480)

    ØLow Voltage (220)

    ·Demonstrate proper disassembly methods for motor inspection and repair.Use meggar to determine winding condition

    ·Install new bearings on test motor.Proper bearings must be determined and correct heating techniques applied for correct installation.End bell fits must also be checked for proper interference

    ·Demonstrate print reading ability

    ·Visual examination and evaluation of basic electrical/electronic components including resistors, relays and semiconductors

    ·Troubleshoot start/stop circuit

    ·Identify 480 vac molded case breaker components

    Ability to perform the following tasks:

    ·Connect and calibrate an electronic pressure transmitter and monitor the signal output with VOM and recorder

    ·Connect and calibrate an electric-to-pneumatic signal converter

    ·Calibrate and adjust a valve positioner and functionally check the operation when installed on a control valve

    Behavioral Based/Technical Skills Interview

    The interview is a behavioral based interview incorporating our Core Competencies.In this process we believe that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior and more recent behavior is a better predictor of future behavior than older behavior, and that long-standing trends are better predictors of behavior than isolated incidents.We therefore have patterned the questions during the interview to solicit behavior patterns that indicate with high predictability whether the candidate can perform the job as required.

    This type of interview is different than those that you may have taken in the past.

    Normal Minimum Requirements:

    ·Must have successfully qualified as an Instrument & Control Repairman II, or have equivalent training in a similar job classification with a minimum of four (4) years instrumentation technician experience.

    ·Ovation background is preferred

    ·Electrical Maintenance experience

    ·Must have extensive experience with DCS and PLC’s

    ·Overtime required

    ·Must be able to read prints and equipment manuals

    ·Perform basic math calculations

    ·Basic computer skills—data entry, data retrieval

    ·Must possess working knowledge of Craft Tools

    ·Must possess a valid driver’s license.

    ·Must be able to bend , lift, and stoop for extended periods

    ·Must be able to climb stairs, work from ladders and elevated platforms

    ·Must be able to work harmoniously with other workers

    ·Must have basic knowledge of plant processes

    ·Strong verbal and written communication skills

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of an Electrical or Instrumentation Apprenticeship program

  • Medium voltage Electrical Maintenance experience
  • HART Communication experience
  • Relay experience

    Position Description:

    Install, test, calibrate, tune, maintain, repair and modify all plant electrical, instrument, and control systems at the highest level of skill in accordance with training, plant procedures and direction.Perform other duties as directed, including the duties of lower classifications.

    Position-Related Responsibilities:

    ¨Understand and follow Company policies and procedures.

    ¨Understand and follow Federal and State safety regulations.

    ¨Understand theory, operation, troubleshooting of plant electrical and instrumentation equipment.

    ¨Ability to read, understand and interpret schematics, logic drawings, or other prints or drawings as necessary.

    ¨Perform job setup including required materials, tools and special equipment normally associated with electrical or instrumentation at a generating station.

    ¨Perform complex system repair/trouble shooting using limited information and instructions

    ¨Perform work alone or in a team setting and direct lower classifications as needed.

    ¨Maintain a high level of awareness and responsibility for the environmental considerations that impact them, their jobs and the Company to the level of their knowledge, training and experience

    ¨Perform assigned work in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with Company practices and procedures.

    ¨Work overtime as required.

    ¨This position may provide services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    ¨Must meet position requirements and demonstrate competency through the established testing procedure.

    ¨Ability to utilize computer based maintenance management system.

    ¨Must have qualified as an Instrument and Control Repairman II, or related experience, or have successfully completed structured certified training programs and be able to produce those certifications and have completed all assigned training in order to competently complete all assigned tasks.

    ¨Perform math calculations as needed to accurately identify voltages, current flows, or other items in order to perform duties safely and competently.

    ¨Ability to use calibration, measuring, and testing equipment.

    ¨Ability to safely operate all hand and power tools normally associated with this craft.

    ¨Must have Electrical maintenance experience.
