We are currently seeking students enrolled in an accredited EMT program to join our Emergency Transport team as part of a paid EMT Apprentice program.
Start your career at St. Luke’s University Health Network, a Level 1 Trauma Center, Stroke Center and rated the number one Tertiary Care teaching hospital in the country.
This unique opportunity will provide you a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience, skill-building and knowledge training, aimed at building the competencies needed to become a well-rounded EMS provider.
At the same time, you will be working alongside our very own EMTs, Paramedics, PHRN’s and more!
Upon completion of an EMT program, state certifications, and EVOC certification, an EMT apprentice may have the following options extended:
- Option 1: $3,000 sign on bonus (if applicable), paid/reimbursement of EVOC training, reimbursement for EMT program as part of an 18-month commitment of employment.
- Option 2: Remain per diem EMT in the network, this option does not include any financial incentives.
Individuals enrolled at Northampton Community College may be eligible for Tuition Deferment as part of this St. Luke's Apprentice Program.
St Luke’s Emergency Transport Services (SLETS) has been providing high-quality emergency medical services to the communities in and around the Lehigh Valley for more than 30 years and is licensed in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
SLETS provides 911 emergency care and non-emergency interfacility transport care by operating out of 8 strategically located ambulance stations.
SLETS is licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health to specifically provide basic life support (BLS), advanced life support (ALS) and critical care/specialty care transportation.
SLETS has a strong communications center located in Allentown at St. Luke’s Center.
Highly trained dispatchers monitor all SLETS operations which promotes efficient and effective deployment of resources to manage the 911 and non-emergent transportation requests.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Working under the direct supervision of a certified/licensed PA EMS Provider as regulated by the Pennsylvania Department of Health Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, administers basic life support to patients at the scene, en route to the hospital and in a pre-hospital setting in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and standards.
Under the direct supervision of the St. Luke’s Emergency and Transport Services (SLETS) Field Training Officer (FTO) or Designee assigned by SLETS Leadership:
+ Assesses the nature and extent of injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed.
+ Assists in rescuing and extricating victims of accidents, sudden illness or entrapment using proper rescue and medical techniques.
+ Treats patients at the scene, en route to t he hospital, and in a pre-hospital setting in accordance with federal, state, local, laws, regulations and standards.
+ Communicates with professional medical personnel and treatment facilities to obtain instructions regarding further treatment and/ or to arrange reception of patients to the appropriate center.
+ Maintains order at scenes, including crowd disbursement and restraint of family and friends.
+ Completes patient care forms, insurance forms, evaluation forms, ambulance checklist and all other forms in a competent and timely fashion.
+ Collaborates with other health team members to maintain a professional working relationship with all organizations at an incident.
+ Completely, thoroughly, professionally documents assessments, physical findings and treatment rendered in pre-hospital setting on approved patient care report within 24 hours of the dispatch of the call.
+ Completes vehicle and equipment accountability checklist each scheduled shift.
+ Places the vehicle in condition of readiness including, cleaning, disinfecting, refueling and restocking.
+ Is alert to potential CQI problems and actively participates in solving such problems.
+ As related to the current progression of the EMT class, will demonstrate competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.
+ Recognizes and utilizes proper chain of command.
+ Attends at least six (6) staff meetings per year.
+ Recognizes legal responsibilities and functions within limitations as specified by law..
+ Will not operate any vehicle belonging to St. Luke’s University Health Network, Vendors, Partners or municipal agencies.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
+ Sitting 3 hours a day; 30 minutes at a time.
Standing up to 2 hours a day; 30 minutes at a time.
Walking up to 3 hours a day; 30 minutes at a time.
Continuous use of hands and fingers.
Frequently grasping firmly and twisting/turning of the fingers and hand(s) simultaneously.
Occasionally reaches above shoulder level.
Occasionally lifts an object from a lower to a higher position 200 to 350 pounds.
Occasionally carrying an object of 11 to 25 pounds.
Occasionally pushes up to 75 pounds.
Occasionally pulls up to 350 pounds.
Frequently stooping and bending.
Frequently squatting.
Occasionally crouching and kneeling.
Occasionally crawling.
Occasional climbing.
Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch.
Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation.
Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color, peripheral vision and vision monotony.
Maintain balance and strength in awkward positions.
Speak clearly, even under stressful circumstances.
Accurately communicate ideas orally and in writing in English.
Respond physically with speed.
Speak at proper volumes for appropriate situations.
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma required.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
+ Currently enrolled in and in good standing of an accredited or Authorized Pennsylvania Department of Health EMS Emergency Medical Technician Training Program required.
+ Valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
+ Tact courtesy, initiative, judgment and the ability to follow directions is required.
+ Driver requirements (PA DOH Requirement).
Be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver's license.
Must observe all traffic laws.
Must not be addicted to, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Must be free from any physical or mental defects or disease that may impair the person’s ability to drive an ambulance.
