Job Title: Engine Crew Supervisor

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

Job Description:
The Utah Department of Natural Resources is seeking a qualified candidate[s] for a benefited career or career-seasonal position as an Engine Crew Supervisor.

This role involves managing Type 3 and Type 4 engines for both local and national wildfire response.

Key responsibilities include recruiting and training crew members, maintaining and operating engines, managing equipment inventory, supervising fuel mitigation projects, and overseeing administrative duties such as timesheets, procurement, and personnel evaluations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Extensive Wildfire Expertise: Demonstrated expertise in wildfire suppression strategies and tactics, with substantial experience in fireline leadership.
  • Qualifications: Certified as an Engine Boss (ENGB), Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5), and Faller 3 (FAL3).

    Responsibilities

  • Supervise Personnel: Oversee subordinate staff by determining workloads, delegating assignments, providing training, evaluating performance, and initiating corrective or disciplinary actions as needed.

    Mentor and motivate team members, offer clear direction, and develop/deliver training curriculum.
  • Plan and Organize Operations: Develop strategies and plans to coordinate workplace functions, including scheduling, vacation coverage, and staffing needs.

    Enforce established workplace procedures, authorize and audit unit billing/expenditures, maintain accurate records, and arrange for equipment maintenance while ensuring accountability.
  • Ensure Safety: Identify and mitigate hazardous situations to protect personnel, resources, and the public.
  • Provide Leadership: Deliver clear leader’s intent and direction for wildland firefighting and project operations, ensuring all activities comply with agency safety guidelines.
  • Maintain Certifications: Complete annual core training and certification requirements, including qualifications, competency evaluations, and arduous physical fitness standards.

  • Ability to Obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker Endorsement.
  • Ability to Pass the Arduous Work Capacity Test.
  • Certified Faller 3 (FAL3).

  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Faller 2 (FAL2).
  • Qualified Type 4 Incident Commander (ICT4).
  • Qualified Prescribed Fire Burn Boss 3 (RXB3).
  • Degree in Emergency Services or Natural Resources.

  • The duties of this position involve strenuous physical activities during emergencies, often under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods.

  • Candidates must be able to adapt to exposure to weather elements, dust, smoke, and challenging living and eating situations in unpredictable circumstances.

  • Fire and land management projects may require camping in remote locations and preparing their own food.

    The role demands on-call availability, extensive travel, and the ability to endure primitive camping conditions.

  • Fieldwork is required in inclement weather and rough terrain, necessitating physical exertion, including the ability to stand for long periods, walk over uneven surfaces, bend, and lift heavy items (up to and over 50 lbs).

  • Additionally, the position involves operating vehicles in rough terrain, working around heavy equipment, and using chainsaws.

  • Must obtain or possess a First Aid/CPR Certification.

  • Must obtain or possess a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker Endorsement.

  • Must adhere to agency on-call policies and standards during the designated period of time throughout the fire season.

  • Must travel and participate with the engine crew on all assignments (project, fire, and all-hazard) unless otherwise discussed and arranged.

  • Must be able to pass a drug screening.

  • The Pay scale is $30.83 to $46.26.
