Responsibilities You will serve as an ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (MECHANICAL) in the AC and R/AIR SYSTEMS BRANCH (CODE 252) of the SOUTHEAST REGIONAL MAINTENANCE CENTER (SERMC) located in MAYPORT, FL.
You will serve as Team or Group Leader providing technical oversight and immediate authoritative technical assistance on urgent mission degrading casualty reports (CASREPs) or similar problems.
You will troubleshoot, repair, and test high, medium, and low-pressure air compressors, AC-and-R plants, compressed air systems, bleed, prairie, masker, start and dry air systems, and ventilation systems and each systems associated components.
You will participate in data collection and integral data analysis efforts as directed to evaluate performance characteristics, assess improvements, record trends, etc.
You will perform functional checkout, refinement, adjustment, and tests of new or modernized shipboard systems in an operational evaluation.
Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify for a GS-12, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying a comprehensive and authoritative knowledge of assigned systems to permit rapid analysis and resolution of atypical problems.
Must have mastered specialty field to the extent of resolving problems, which normally confuse others.
Experience being familiar with related engineering disciplines (such as electrical, electronic, mechanical, structural, etc.) to analyze problems from an overall system viewpoint.
Experience applying knowledge and the ability to resolve complex problems in assigned equipment and systems in a stressful environment and under constant pressure to produce rapid results and meet operational schedules.
Experience using written communication skills to present findings and recommendations in formal engineering reports, and oral communication skills to represent the Command in meetings and dealing with a wide range of contacts at varying levels of authority.

Education BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Examples of qualifying specialized experience include technical work in: drafting, surveying construction estimating, physical science, mathematics, aerospace, architecture, chemicals, electrical or mechanical systems, mining, petroleum, or nuclear systems.
Experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents.
Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as: Planner and estimator who analyzed designs for production purposes.
Instrument maker or model maker who performed design or development work on devices fabricated.
Certification: Engineering technicians may be certified by the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies, an organization sponsored by the National Society of Professional Engineers.
Certification by the Institute will be helpful as a measure of the technician's quality of experience.

When conducting shipboard investigations and visiting ships incumbent is subject to standing, walking, climbing, and crawling in and around the equipment/system.
Exposure to hazardous electrical voltages, large rotating machinery elements, electromagnetic radiation, nuclear radiation, explosive or flammable materials, and working inside boilers, turbines, condensers, etc.
may occur on a regular basis.
This position requires exposure to high noise levels.
May be exposed to adverse environmental conditions such as hot/cold, humidity, noise, and airborne particles.
Work is normally required aboard U.S. and foreign naval ships at berths, at anchor or at buoys within the harbor.
Occasionally with short notice and/or extended periods of time the incumbent will be required to perform temporary additional duty at sea on naval ships and/or at naval or private shipyards located throughout the world (including combat zones) at approximately 15% of the time.
Must be able to conduct surface vessel/submarine at-sea trials and evaluations.
This position requires rotating shift work.
Shift hours may change without three days advance notice.
Incumbent is required to perform assigned duties at several job sites within the commuting area.
It is the incumbent's responsibility to transport him/herself in an expeditious manner between job sites in the local area of his/her permanent duty station with reimbursement of costs in accordance with Joint Travel Regulations.
This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
