ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs engineering work of a moderately complex nature in the investigation, location, design and construction of improvements and maintenance projects, , permit and land use review, customer service, inspection, updating maps, and related tasks.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this classification may perform any of the following tasks.
However, these examples do not include all the specific duties which an employee may be expected to perform.
Review and process all permits and land use applications.
Coordinate with all departments regarding permits and land use applications. Perform inspections for permits. Assists the Public Works Department as required. Coordinates with City Staff regarding updates to sewer and street engineering maps. Receives and follows up on all questions submitted by phone or at the counter regarding projects, permits, city policies, and customer concerns. Performs construction inspections as required. Prepares written correspondence to City staff, property owners, architects, engineers, and others related to such matters as permits, land use applications, infrastructure issues, and plan reviews. Performs related work as required. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Graduation from high school or possession of the equivalent GED certificate.
Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training which ensures the ability to perform the work may substitute for the above.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: An employee in this position must have the physical strength and agility to perform the job duties of this position; considerable knowledge of mathematics, including trigonometry and its applications to engineering; and knowledge of property mapping systems, and surveying principles, practices and methods.
Must have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
ENGINEERING SERVICES COORDINATOR
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs professional engineering administrative work; directs the planning, designing, and construction of street, sanitary sewer, and storm drain projects.
Maintains an organization through which these projects may be properly planned, designed, and constructed.
Provides technical support for all department activities and performs related work as required.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK: An employee in this classification may perform any of the following tasks.
However, these examples do not include all the specific duties which an employee may be expected to perform.
Supports the Public Works Director or their designee with day-to-day operations of wastewater facilities.
Prepares or assists in preparation of wastewater permit applications, reports, ordinances, regulations, and contracts.
Supports the Public Works Director or their designee with activities related to forest management and timber harvesting. Coordinates activities of consulting engineers and surveyors.
Performs development reviews of plans and specifications for public street, water, sewer, and drainage projects to be done by the city or by a privatelyfinanced project.
Reviews and coordinates privatelyengineered public improvement projects for conformance to city specifications and standards.
Performs construction project inspections and contract administration of publicly funded infrastructure and facility projects. Provides technical services related to floodplain management, various permit/application/development reviews, and maintenance operations.
Computes assessments for construction projects undertaken by the city.
Checks new plats for accuracy and completeness. Prepares cost estimates and legal notices.
Performs inspections of street, sanitary, and storm sewer projects; assists in the preparation of plans and specifications; drafts asbuilt projects, street and property vacation maps, sewer sketches, and miscellaneous maps.
Prepares technical and administrative reports and studies requested.
Assists the Public Works Director or their designee in the creation, maintenance, and revision of city engineering development standards and engineering specifications for public works. Responds to citizen inquiries as they relate to engineering services or other Public Works Department divisions including decisions on the interpretation of city code and engineering policies and procedures.
Works with the other Public Works Department staff to resolve problems and specification changes between contractors and the city. Coordinates with GIS Specialist to ensure the maintenance of city infrastructure maps including new subdivisions, local improvement districts, and city projects.
Draws plans, profiles, and cross sections for sewer lines and roads that are being designed from survey notes and legal designs from survey notes and legal descriptions.
Draws utility permit maps showing location, size, and installation instructions. Attends appropriate meetings to present technical material when required. Other duties as assigned. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Ability to understand and interpret construction contracts and performance agreements for contract administration.
Ability to perform construction project inspections and prepare accurate records and project documentation.
Proficient in reviewing plans and specifications.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to accurately transfer utility and right-of-way locations and information from computer files or drawings to the ground.
Ability to use and understand computer aided drafting system to update and create maps.
Must be able to develop and maintain positive cooperative team-oriented relationships with co-workers, supervisors, managers, and others.
Must be able to have regular, predictable, in-person attendance at work site from the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (for the purposes of this position, the work site will be primarily in the Public Works Department; however, attendance at project sites may also be required).
This position does not allow for an option to telecommute.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Graduation from a two year college or university with specialization in engineering technology, four-year engineering degree preferred.
Four years of progressively responsible municipal engineering experience.
Any satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training which ensures the ability to perform the work may substitute for the above.
An Engineering-In-Training (EIT) certificate is preferred.
