Job description

What You Will DoThe Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT), Radio Frequency Engineering (RFE) group, is seeking an Engineering Technologist 3 for the Low-Level Radio Frequency (LLRF) team.The AOT division maintains, operates, and upgrades all accelerator systems used at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) complex.

These consist of a 201.25-MHz drift-tube linear accelerator (LINAC) utilizing high-power diacrode tubes, an 805 MHz coupled cavity LINAC utilizing high-power klystrons as the primary power source, a proton storage ring, and roughly a kilometer of beam transport lines that deliver beam to the five independent research programs.

The RFE group consists of three teams: one team is focused on Low-Level RF (LLRF) real-time phase and amplitude controls; a second team is focused on high-power 201 MHz RF (HPRF) systems; and the third team is focused on high-power 805 MHz RF (HPRF) systems.

The Accelerator Operations and Technology - Radio Frequency Engineering (AOT-RFE) Group provides expertise, support, and technical leadership in all aspects of RF engineering including gridded tube amplifiers and klystrons as well as RF control systems and RF accelerator cavities.

AOT-RFE's primary focus is the design, and implementation of RF systems for the LANSCE User Facility.

This includes participation in current and future projects.

AOT's secondary focus is to share its expertise and experience with organizations within the Laboratory as well as external partners and sponsors.

Along these lines, AOT-RFE has worked on national accelerator and global security projects utilizing its knowledge base while incorporating cutting edge technology.

Additionally, the group fosters and participates in worldwide collaborations, workshops, and conferences in the interest of exploring and pushing the frontiers in RF technology.The successful candidate will be offered a position on the AOT-RFE LLRF team and will perform technical installation and/or maintenance functions supporting engineering activities relating to RF controls.

The successful applicant will be expected to work closely with engineers and other technicians both within and outside the group to meet both LLRF and group technical goals and deliverables.

Additional specific duties include helping to define technical requirements, working on multiple tasks and projects, building new electronic and RF hardware, repairing, and maintaining existing legacy systems, managing technical interfaces with other LANSCE teams, preparing conduct of engineering documentation, using the accelerator operations maintenance database to track existing system performance, and demonstrating technical excellence and performance to meet system requirements.

Participate in equipment shutdown, in accordance with LOTO policy.

Identifies, and replaces or repairs defective components as well as performing installation of new equipment.Engineering Technologist 3 ($104,100 - $172,200 )The position involves working alongside experienced engineers and other technologists with a wealth of knowledge to share.

The successful applicant is expected to have an understanding of alternate current (AC) and direct current (DC) systems, the principles of radio-frequency amplifier operation, mechanical construction, wiring and printed circuit board assembly, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), fast digital logic and electronics troubleshooting.

Documentation of system operation, tests including writing reports will also be expected.

This appointment involves performing maintenance, installation and repair on the LLRF equipment.

It also requires writing technical documents and the ability to use lab equipment to perform tests and basic research.

The successful applicant will be expected to lead maintenance efforts and collaborate with engineers in the design and implementation of system upgrades.

As an Engineering Technologist 3, you will be expected to create or assist with electronic circuit designs, procurement, documentation and test procedures.

This position involves the use of CAD software as well as system test and PLC programming software.

This assignment includes making recommendations for upgrading engineering designs and mentoring junior personnel.
What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated success with the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, test and repair of analog, digital and/or RF systems.

  • Expert knowledge in resolving complex issues in RF or electronics systems, extensive experience using electronic and RF test equipment.

  • Demonstrated success in applying specialized software to design, assemble, simulate, program, and test RF sub-systems.
  • Expert knowledge working from schematics and documentation, written or verbal instructions, rough sketches, diagrams, layouts, and plans.
  • Demonstrated skills in applying best practices and system engineering processes to requirement's definition and translating those requirements into designs that meet customer expectations.
  • Demonstrated success in the application of engineering principles in the design of electronic circuits from schematic to board layout, as well as the implementation and final testing.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Availability for rotating on-call, working after hours when required.
  • Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

    Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated experience using RF test equipment such as network analyzers, spectrum analyzers and RF power meters.

  • Demonstrated soldering experience with fine-pitch, surface mount components.

  • Programming experience with C, C++, Java, Python, LabVIEW and MATLAB.
  • Experience with programming and using PLCs and/or process controllers.

  • Experience performing complex installation, maintenance, and repairs on equipment and systems applying a variety of methods, procedures, and techniques to install, tune, repair, overhaul, and maintain various types of LLRF equipment and systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform independent diagnosis of failures or malfunctions that occur from complex interrelationships among components, replace defective components, and perform troubleshooting on complex problems using a variety of equipment, detailed drawings, diagrams, sketches, specifications, prints, manuals, and verbal and/or written instructions.

  • Experience with evaluation of electrical safety hazards.
  • Experience with designing digital and analog electronic circuits.
  • Experience writing operational and safety procedures.
  • Operations experience at an accelerator facility.
