    S&ME is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic entry-level Construction Materials Engineering Technician to become part of our Construction Services team in Asheville, North Carolina.

    What You Will Do:

    This role is ideal for those looking to kickstart or advance their career in construction materials testing, acquire practical experience, and develop in a fast-paced setting.

    As a Construction Materials Engineering Technician , you will primarily work outdoors testing and inspecting materials such as soil, concrete, and asphalt to ensure quality and safety.

    Your dedication will be rewarded with the satisfaction of seeing projects come to life and the ability to obtain many industry certifications to support your growth and advancement in this career.

  • Project and Document Analysis : Comprehend project specifications before fieldwork; precisely document observations and test outcomes related to construction materials including soil, concrete, asphalt, and other relevant materials.

  • Metafield Application : Effectively handle and input data using field and laboratory information systems.

  • Tool Maintenance : Ensure field and lab equipment are calibrated and comply with industry standards.

  • Special Inspection Monitoring : Adhere to International Building Code (IBC) standards for testing and inspecting construction materials including soil, concrete, asphalt, and other relevant materials.

  • Stakeholder Interaction : Communicate with management, contractors, and clients to report project progress and address any issues.

  • Who You Are:

  • You have a High School diploma/GED
  • You have 0-5+ years of experience in construction testing/inspections of soil, concrete, masonry, and/or asphalt materials
  • You have one(1) or more active certifications, a plus: American Concrete Institute (ACI): Field Testing Grade I; Strength Testing Technician; Laboratory Technician
  • You have effective communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language
  • You have math skills with a basic understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and units of measure

  • Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

    You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:

  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially up to 12 hours a day
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuvering field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground around active construction sites
