Environmental Engineer - Air Job Opening In Alvin – Now Hiring Ascend Performance Materials

We have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Engineer – Air Compliance at our Pensacola Plant in Cantonment, Florida.

This role is responsible for leading site air permitting and compliance programs to ensure sustainable, best-in-class environmental performance.

The position requires regulatory expertise, technical depth, and the ability to partner with operations and maintenance teams to drive compliance and continuous improvement.

Targeted Outcomes

  • Achieve and sustain compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations, with emphasis on air quality.
  • Secure and maintain all required permits to support ongoing operations and growth projects.
  • Proactively identify compliance risks, implement mitigation plans, and ensure timely communication to site leadership.
  • Strengthen environmental performance through effective training, self-assessments, and field engagement.
  • Build strong relationships with regulators, community stakeholders, and site personnel to enable compliance and credibility.
  • Responsibilities

    Air Permitting & Compliance

  • Lead site programs for Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) air quality regulations, including New Source Review (NSR), New Source Performance Standards (NSPS), National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP), Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT), greenhouse gases (GHG), and annual operating reports (AOR).
  • Prepare, submit, and maintain all required permits and regulatory reports, including Title V compliance reports.
  • Organize and oversee stack testing, monitoring programs, and reporting for multiple production units.
  • Regulatory Interface & Risk Management

  • Serve as primary contact for regulatory agencies on air permitting and compliance matters.
  • Manage inspections, enforcement actions, and inquiries in accordance with company and legal requirements.
  • Anticipate regulatory changes and assess potential impact to site operations, ensuring timely preparation and risk mitigation.
  • Program Leadership & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and maintain site environmental management systems to ensure compliance and improve efficiency.
  • Track and analyze key compliance metrics; implement systems to enhance performance and reliability.
  • Lead or participate in environmental audits and follow-up actions.
  • Support incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions to strengthen performance and build a learning culture.
  • Collaboration & Training

  • Partner with operations, maintenance, engineering, and training groups to ensure environmental considerations are integrated into daily work practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and deliver training programs to enhance environmental knowledge and accountability across the site.
  • Actively engage in the field to model environmental leadership and build ownership among employees and contractors.
  • Broader Environmental Support

  • Support additional environmental media programs (, water, waste) as needed.
  • Provide coverage for urgent site needs, including after-hours support.
  • Team and Interactions

  • Reports to: Site Environmental Manager
  • Interactions: Collaborates with site leadership, operations, maintenance, engineering, and regulatory agencies.

    Works cross-functionally to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Required Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, or related Engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in air quality compliance within chemical, petrochemical, or refining industries.
  • Experience with state-required air construction and operating permits.
  • Desired Experience

  • Experience with FDEP permitting processes.
  • Knowledge of Benzene Waste Operations (BWON), Hazardous Organic NESHAP (HON), and Miscellaneous Organic NESHAP (MON).
  • Familiarity with Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR), continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS), and fenceline monitoring.
  • Awareness of water quality and solid waste management practices.
  • Required Skills

  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations and permitting strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change, build accountability, and influence at all levels of the organization.
  • Effective communicator with strong interpersonal, facilitation, and coaching skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results on time.
  • Strong computer skills with advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.

  • Experience with Environmental Data Management Systems software for compliance tracking and reporting.
  • Familiarity with American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care Management System (RCMS) preferred.
