**POSITION OVERVIEW** **:**

We're seeking a temporary Experimental Tool and Die Machinist who is primarily focused on the rapid and efficient development of prototypes of advanced RF sources, accelerator-structures, and ultra-high vacuum and high-power RF components.

Machining of components for research systems and equipment may also include other tasks related to the fabrication, construction, repair, installation, modification, operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment used in laboratories.

**Note** : This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible temporary-nonexempt position (work at 50% full-time equivalent or more, not to exceed 980 hours in six consecutive months.)

**CORE DUTIES:**

+ Under minimum supervision, perform the highest skill level of manual machining at SLAC.
+ Design tools and dies for precision metal forming to tolerances of 0.0002.
+ Machine highly complex structures, which may require multi-axis surfacing.
+ Set-up, program, monitor and maintain the full spectrum of manual and CNC machines in work area including horizontal and vertical mills, lathes, and live tooling multi-spindle lathes.
+ Design fixtures and tooling for proper support and alignment of prototype parts.
+ Maintain surface finishes of 8 inch or better.
+ Maintain flatness tolerances within 3 microns.
+ Machine a wide range of materials including (but not limited to) annealed copper, cupronickel, porous tungsten matrix, molybdenum without chipping or deforming.
+ Maintain tolerances of 0.0001.

+ Contribute to the prototype design effort by working with engineers and designers to improve drawings to avoid potentially unnecessary cost drivers.
+ Import solid models from CAD to CAM.
+ Plan and run jobs on multiple machines for optimal efficiency.
+ Adhere to the appropriate Work Planning and Control processes when maintaining machines.

This includes proper handling of hazardous waste, lock and tag and machine maintenance, hoisting and rigging and all the WPC controls that are associated with that, etc.
+ Verify conformance to specification using metrology equipment.
+ Adhere to safety rules.

**MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:**

+ Vocational school, apprenticeship, and minimum six years on the job experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
+ Demonstrate the ability to apply expertise to efficiently develop new, creative solutions to satisfy research and development needs.
+ Must demonstrate expertise working with manual and CNC lathes, mills, advanced programming skills, a thorough understanding of Geometric Design and Tolerance.
+ Ability to rapidly and efficiently develop prototypes to meet schedules.
+ Specialized knowledge of and experience with machining for ultra-high vacuum applications, and ability to plan and run multiple jobs simultaneously.
+ Capable of doing precision work and designing the necessary jigs and fixtures required to plan and execute complex jobs with multiple set-ups and steps.
+ Demonstrated capability of working to tolerances of +/- 0.0002 or less in fabricating complex parts for research equipment.
+ Demonstrated experience in high precision machining, CAD-CAM (Solid Edge, Team Center, a and Mastercam experience preferred), prototyping, or other related specialized work.
+ Ability to perform work requiring a high degree of initiative and judgment on non-repetitive jobs and follow through to completion.
+ Demonstrated strong communication skills (both verbal and written).
