In collaboration with the Department of Emergency Medicine, the Center for Biostatistics and Data Science (CBDS) seeks highly qualified applicants for a faculty position of Biostatistics and Data Science at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor rank on the Research track.
Successful candidates will be expected to support robust, extramurally funded research and educational programs with an emphasis on implementation science research methodologies, collaborating closely with faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine and across the Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM).
This faculty role aims to strengthen institutional expertise in biostatistical methods for pragmatic and other clinical trial designs, while also supporting the growing field of implementation science.
In addition to leading the design, execution, and evaluation of clinical trials and translational research studies, the successful candidate will have opportunities to apply and extend clinical trial expertise to implementation science contexts—helping to accelerate the uptake of evidence-based interventions in real-world practice.
The role also includes training and mentoring faculty, staff, and trainees in rigorous trial and study design, contributing substantially to methodological training and capacity-building within the institution.
Candidates should have a PhD in biostatistics, statistics, data science, or a closely related field, at least 5 years of relevant experience as a collaborative biostatistician in clinical trials, and a proven record of extramural funding, peer-reviewed publications, and mentorship.

The Institute for Informatics, Data Science and Biostatistics (I2DB) at WashU is the home of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science research, education, and services spanning WashU, BJC, and affiliated entities addressing modern healthcare and life sciences needs.
I2DB focuses on integrative and data-intensive research approaches across clinical, translational, and population-level studies.
It also provides graduate training programs in informatics, data science, and biostatistics and conducts innovative research, workforce development, and service delivery in critical areas like precision medicine and research reproducibility.
I2DB spans academic units across the university, enhancing WashU’s strengths by leveraging regional research and healthcare enterprises.
Basic Qualifications
The ideal candidate will demonstrate: (1) substantial experience for collaborative research within interdisciplinary teams, particularly in Emergency Medicine and related clinical specialties; (2) expertise in clinical trial design and analysis, including pragmatic trials, and the ability to adapt approaches for translational or implementation science studies; (3) a strong record of peer-reviewed publications and supporting and contributing to successful funding proposals for clinical trials and implementation science-oriented projects; (4) leadership roles serving as the lead biostatistician on funded clinical trials, developing comprehensive statistical analysis plans, and mentoring team members on methodological approaches; and (5) commitment to strengthening institutional infrastructure for clinical trial research and supporting integration with translational and implementation science initiatives.
Experience with federally funded implementation research, interdisciplinary team-based projects, and training in implementation science methodologies are strongly preferred.
Knowledge of or willingness to develop expertise in implementation science research methods is essential for this position.
Compensation, start-up packages, and financial support will be highly competitive and commensurate with the candidate's rank, experience, and performance.
