Feedlot Cowboy (Grand View, ID)

The J.R. Simplot Company is a diverse, privately held global food and agriculture company headquartered in Boise, Idaho.

We are a true farm-to-table company with an integrated portfolio including food processing and food brands, phosphate mining, fertilizer manufacturing, farming, ranching and cattle production, and other enterprises related to agriculture.

**Summary**

Assists in the care and treatment of feedlot cattle by performing the following duties.

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

+ Monitors cattle by riding the feedlot pens on horseback to identify sick, injured, or stressed animals; removes the sick or injured cattle from pens to be medically treated.
+ Assists with the receiving, unloading, sorting, and processing of cattle as assigned by the Feedlot and/or Cattle Manager.
+ Assists in the medical treatment of sick or injured cattle by following an established medical-treatment plan provided by the Staff Veterinarian.
+ Moves cattle from pen to pen as instructed by the Cattle Manager and/or Lead Cowboy to rotate cattle according to production schedules.
+ Trains, shoes, feeds, and medically treats horses to provide healthy, productive animals.
+ Other duties may be assigned.

**Education and/or Experience**

+ High school diploma, GED or equivalent (Preferred, but not required)
+ Knowledgeable in the areas of animal health and cattle conditions generally acquired with a minimum of two to five years related experience and/or training
+ Prior experience working with cattle in one or more of the cattle production segments (cow-calf, stocker, cattle feeding) is preferred

**Language Skills**

+ Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
+ Ability to write simple correspondence.
+ Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

**Mathematical Skills**

+ Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
+ Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

**Reasoning Ability**

+ Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
+ Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

**Additional Requirements**

+ Adequate horsemanship skills
+ Must be able to saddle and ride a horse.
+ Must provide own tack.

+ The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
+ The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
+ Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
